ALGONAC.
A village of some 700 inhabitants, in Clay township, St. Clair county. It is situated at the head of the St. Clair flats and is 17 miles distant from the Grand Trunk railway at Baltimore station. A discontinued post-office in Oceana county, Io miles north of Montague and 19 south of Pentwater.
ALLEGAN.
The county seat of Allegan county, a flourishing village of about 3,000 inhabitants, situated on the Kalamazoo river, in the south central part of the county. It is 25 miles north of Kalamazoo and 30 south of Grand Rapids. Two railroads pass through Allegan, the Michigan Lake Shore R. K., extending from Battle Creek to Muskegon. and the Grand Rapids branch of the L .. S. & M. S. R. R. A third road is in process of

completion from Mansfield, O., to Allegan, :i.s Coldwater and Battle Creek. A steam- boat plies on the Kalamazoo river between Allegan and the lake.
The village is situated mainly upon a pen- insula formed by a horse shoe bend of the Kalamazoo river. It is surrounded by high table lands extending back into the country and having a productive soil. There are several spacious business blocks, built of stone and brick and having fronts of good style and finish. Ample accomodations are thus furnished not only for merchandising and other industrial pursuits, but for profes- sional offices.
Allegan has eight churches, a library asso- ciation, a flourishing union school, two newspapers, the Journal (Republican), and the Democrat, and two first-rate hotels. The manufacturing interests embrace two or more each of saw mills, flouring mills, sash and door factories, foundries and machine shops, pump factories, carriage factories, cooper shops, breweries, etc. A fall of eight feet in the river furnishes a splendid water power.
The incorporated companies include the Allegan Manufacturing company, capital $25,000, James T. Ganson president, Wm. S. Crosby secretary, and H. B. Peck treas- urer; the Allegan Car Company, capital $100,000, J. Fisk president, B. D. Prich- ard secretary and treasurer; and the First National Bank, capital $50,000, Benj. D. Prichard president, George B. Robinson cashier.
Holly water works, double machinery driven by water power, supply the village with water.
Allegan was laid out in 1835 by the Bos- ton company, an eastern land company, who improved the water power, built a saw mill and procured the settlement here of a num- ber of families. School houses, churches, hotels and manufactories sprang up, a bank was established and everything was going on swimmingly when the panic of IS38swept the foundations from the speculative struc- ture, and for years after it suffered from the back-set. Prosperity was again assured by the opening of the Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids railroad in 1868, since which the place has enjoyed a healthy growth in popu- lation and business.

White river, a mill stream, passes through the place. The surrounding country abounds in excellent pine timber. The first settlement was made in 1873. Present population 400. A postoffice and mining village at the lo- cation of the Allouez copper mine, on the line between Houghton and Keweenaw counties, about four miles north of Calumet.

A village of Gratiot county, lies on the line between Pine River and Arcada town- ships. Good water power is afforded by Pine river. It is situated in a good lumber and grain producing region. Shipments are woolen goods, lumber and shingles. Dis- tant from Ithaca, the county seat 9 miles and 312 from St. Louis, the terminus of the Saginaw Valley and St. Louis Railroad. A thriving village of 1,000 inhabitants, in the southeastern part of Lapeer county. is the center of a rich farming region but has been left out in the cold by the railroad pro- jectors, the Port Huron and Chicago R.
