THE WASTEBASKET Into which are often tossed things well worth while.

The name of Elijah Gates is per- petuated in the Ozarks.

Vacationista, visiting Lake Taney- come in the Mimourl . Ozarks, .in making a trip by bos! from Bran- con to the dam have noticed on the right side, about two miles out of Branson, a pretty bungalow in a setting of trees and lawn. the grounds entered through an arch on which appear the words "Richmond Gates."

This is the home of Dr. and Mrs W. Spier Richmond, formerly of St. Joseph, but who have lived in the Branson neighborhood lone mnouch to be classed as oid selllers. The significance of the words "Rich- mond Gales" is fully appreciated when It is learned that Mrs. Rich- mond's maiden name was Gates.

Elijah Gates, and a sister of Joel E. Oates. city license inspector of St. Joseph.

Doctor Richmond was coroner of Buchanan county from 1896 to 1900. Shortly thereafter he moved to Kansas City and from Kansas City to Branson on account of failing health. He soon regained his health

and now has an extensive practice in Branson and vicinity.

LaUjah Gates is gradually passing from the memory of this gener- ation. He has been dead many years but in his time he was a not- ed character in Missouri. He was a ·t federate. servico

- and lost an arm in one of the battles of the civil war. He was treasurer of the state and was for years prominent in public affairs. He was the first man to cry in Springheld: "O, JCL. O TEL. The banorable United States district court of the southern division of the western district of Missouri is now in session." He opened the first term of federal court here in the old court house which was pro- vided by the county until quarters were obtained. Before the federal building was erected it was requir- ed that the Greene county court provide a home for federal court. Col. Gates was marshal of the dis- triet and he came here with other federal officials to conduct court.
