CARTHAGE BOY KILLED BY&WOMAN -- MOTORIST


CARTHAGE,; Mo. Dec. 23 .- (AP) -Harry Ives. 19. & City Electric company employe, was crushed to death this afternoon by an automo- bile driven by Mrs. W. H. Woodford. of Carthage.


The victim was kneeling in : the act of guying a rope.


An electric light pole which was being installed blocked the street at the time of the accident. Mrs. ---


Woodford misinterpreted a flag- man's warning signal and then · swerved her car into Ives in an at- tempt to avoid the pole.


Ives 'is survived by his widow, a bride of a 'few months.

Sudden Death Halts Reunion In Ozarks City

Death has prevented & Christmas reunion at Reeds through the pass- Ing of William Mowell. lumber company manager. Mr. Mowell died at the wheel of his automobile while he and his wife were enroute to Sar- coxle to meet their son, Keith, of Chicago.

Lowry Citizen Dies in Crash On Highway 71


A collision involving three trucks on highway No. : 71, six miles, south of Harrisonville, 'last night resulted In the death of O. B. Cooper, 47, a huckster of Lowry City. Cooper was guiding a truck being towed by an- other machine, when one driven by Paul Branic, of Pleasant Hill, Mo .. collided with them. Cooper died shortly after reaching a hospital.

AFTER friends and relatives had spent a day searching for him. the body of J. Warren Swift, former bank cashier at Reeds Spring and cousin of. Dr. Carl B. Swift, dean of the Bible school at Drury college, was found in a barn yes- terday . noon with a shotgun wound in the temple.

BORROWED SHOTGUN . -


Mr. Swift borrowed a shotgun from a friend Monday morning. He explained that he wanted to use it on a rabbit hunting trip. When he falled to return to his home Mon- day night search was started.

-- The search did not end until his body was found in the hayloft of his barn by Luther Arnold; a fellow townsman. The gun. carrying discharged shell." lay beside him. It is believed he . killed himself some time Monday.


FATHER HEADED BANK


Mr. Swift, who is well known over the country, Is the son of the late Charles B. Swift, who at one time


was, president of the Reeds Spring bank. The son served as cashier. The Institution was taken over sev- eral years ago by the Shepherd of the Hills bank. Swift had no in- terest in the bank.


Friends said that they were un- able to give any reason why Mr. Swift should take his life. "They said he apparently had been in good health and that he had not, as ; far as they knew. experienced any financial reverses.


Mr. Swift was not married. He. Is survived by two sisters and . brother, Brainard Swift. who lives In California.


No inquest had been held yes- : terday.


Polk County Man Killed In St. Louis In ; Auto Accident


William Thomas Saye, 72, mem- ber of a prominent pioneer family of Polk county, was killed in an automobileaccident in St. Louis Monday, according to word receiv- ed here by relatives yesterday. Funeral services will be in St. Louis Thursday morning.


Mr. Saye was salesman for a tea and coffee concern. He was unmarried and had lived in St. Louis many years. He was born near Morrisville and spent his boy- hood there.


Mr. Saye is survived by Pro sis- ters, Mrs. Helen Skidmore and Mrs. Jennie Wise; both of Manchester, Ill., and one brother. Ed Saye :of Jacksonville, Ill. " He has two nieces . in Springfield, Mrs. Al Rountree and Mrs. P. M. Hull.


MRS. MAUDE L. PAYNE Funeral services for Mrs. Maude .L. Payne. 42, wife of D. J. Payne. 2142 North Main avenue, will be held Thursday after- noon' at 2:30 o'clock at Hamiin Memorial Baptist church. She died early yesterday morning. Interment in Green Lawn ceme- why will be made under the direction of J. W. Klingner.

For their accommodation-and happiness-Jack W. McKee, re- corder, has arranged to Issue licenses at his home at 963 North Lyon avenue.
