THE CALLEY, OR CAWLEY, FAMILIES. - THREE BRANCHES. I.
The orthography of this name is divided. Our oldest records in Sanbornton favor " Cawley," though " Calley" now more generally prevails, and some insist that this is the primitive way of spelling. Of the numerous families in this town, we give, first, in genealogical order, the three ancestors who are known to have been brothers, and the sons of:
1. THOMAS, and MARY, his wife. The records of Epping have been searched in vain for fuller ancestral notes upon this and other fiumilies who came thence to this town. We only know that this is the parentage of the three brothers from the fact that after the birth of [3], the only Calley given, he is called the son of Thomas and Mary, as above, the known parents of [2]. white also [3] and [4] are acknowledged brothers. Hence three of their sons ( see also Ad- denda) were :
2. THOMAS, Jr. [5].
3. JONATHAN [7], b. May 19, 1756. (Epping record says 1757.)
4. JOSIAH [14], b. about 1758, in E., probably.
5 THOMAS2, Jr [2] (Thomas1). We are only informed of him that he lived in Epping (though he probably came to S. and here d., April 12, 1810), and was the father of
6. RICHARD [20], b. Sept. 5, 1773, in E.
7. JONATHAN2 [3] (Thomas1), m. Elizabeth Coal (Betsey Cole), Aug. 15, 1781, probably in Epping, and moved thence (one account says from Exeter) about that time to this town ; was the first settler on the farm lately owned by his son, Dea. Jonathan [36], north end of Lot No. 31, 2d Div., near the Cawley Pond, which received from him its name. IIe d. Jan. 18, 1810, ac. 83-8. She was b. March 18, 1755, d. Ang. 2, 1845, ac. 90 -- 5. Children (t. r.):
