34. FREDERICK ALLEN, b. June 28, 1849; Is succeeding his father lu the liv- ery-stable business, Lake Village (1877-80) ; m. Nellle Morgan, Feb. 22, 1876.

AMos M.7 [24] (Philip C.", Joseph5, Joseph+, etc.), first came to Franklin at the age of 18, and drove the large team of the Peabody & Daniels Paper Co. to Boston for four years, at $240 per year ; set- tled on his father's place in Sanbornton at the latter's death ; was a trader at Clark's Corner two years; carried on the Woodman place, 1855-60, and has since resided on the Sanborn Road, till 1867 ; at the old Harper (afterwards Eastman) place on the hill till 1876, and now (1880) at the late Brackett L. Johnston's, old Lovejoy site, lower end of the Square Village. He m. Irene Elkins, Nov. 29, 1839, who was b in Northfield (now Franklin Falls), Nov. 6, 1813, the dau. of Thomas and Lydia (Marston) Elkins. Children :


36. Asros Dow, b. Sept. 20, 1842; was a bugler in the 4th N. II. Regiment, afterwards a member of Gilmore's Band, Boston, in service at New Orleans. He m. Phebe W. Morrisou, dau. of William T. (see), Dec., 1865; now lives in Marlborough, Mass. (1880), devoting himself to instrumental music and instruction in the same. Children : - 1. Emma Rene, b. Oct. 31, 1806. 2. Ina May, b. May 4, 1846, d. of small-pox (a distressing case) at his father's, in Sanborntou, Dee. 7, 1872, ae. 20-7. Was a drummer, first In the 15th N. II. Regiment, 10 months, enlisting very young; then in the 7th Co. N. H. Heavy Artillery from Sept. 6, 1864, till the end of the war. Had resided some years before his death in Westborough, Mass., where, an overseer in a hnt factory, greatly beloved and respected, as indicated by the delegations preseut at his obsequies in the Congregational meeting-house of this town, June 1, 1873.

SAMUEL Dow7 [27] (Mark6, Joseph5, Joseph4, etc.) learned the bricklayer's trade in Boston ; m , Ist, Eliza Ann Glover, of Con- cord ; m., 2d, Mary Ann Cook, of Boston; passed his last days in a most attractive home, in Charlestown, Mass., and there d. Sept. 28, 1868, ae. 60-3. He was buried in the Tilton Cemetery. " My Father calls ; I must go, though I love you so dearly." " Precious Jesus, take me home."

Martha Drew Rand, Nov. 4, 1849, who was b in North- field, March 8, 1826, dau. of Samuel and Sarah (Waldron) Rand. He became blind, and d. THE BAMFORD FAMILY.


1. "WIDOW BAMFORD" is reported to have been among the resi- dents of town as early as 1768. Her husband is thought to have been Jacob! Bamford, and he probably d. before his family settled in San- bornton, as his name does not appear on the " Petition of 1768." She had located, with her children, near " Little Bay," south of the present railroad, and on the south part of the farm still owned by her descendant, near the depot at East Tilton, Lot No. 58, 2d Div. On coming to town they took possession of a log-house or hut, some fif- teen feet square, which had previously been erceted by a temporary fishing settler, and is claimed by some as the first dwelling built within the confines of Sanbornton. Mrs. Bamford had but two children, and before they were hardly of a suitable age to care for themselves, she again m., 2d, and left town. Children :

11. JAcon3 [8] (Jacob2, Jacob1), retained the old homestead, and in. Deborah Lyford, dan. of Francis Lyford, of Gilmanton, Dec. , 1831. She was b. July 21, 1798. He was a shoemaker by trade ; always lived on the spot where he was born ; was postmaster at Union Bridge for eight years, and deputy sheriff twelve years. Long afflicted with heart disease, be d. suddenly, March 29, 1874, ae. 79-8. Ile was a member of the company that went to Portsmouth from this place during the war of 1814, and was ever beloved by his friends and respected by his townsmen through life. She d. April 28, 1876, in her 78th year. Children :


12. JACOB FRANCIS, b. Feb. 11, 1833; m. Mchitable Ann Gile, dan. of Samuel ( see), Jan. 29, 1863; is a farmer ou the ancestral acres (1880) ; was station ageut of the B., C., and M. THE BATCIIELDER FAMILIES. - FIVE BRANCHES. - I.


1. WILLIAM+ BATCHELDER, b. Aug. 18 (Sept. 7), 1764, in Hamp- ton ; was the 4th child and 3d son of Carter3, who m., 1st, IInkah Moulton ; m., 2d, Hannah Lane ; was a sea-captain, and d. at sca. He (Carter3) was the 10th child and 4th son of Samuel", whose father was Nathaniel1. The parentage of the latter is not satisfactorily deter- mined ; has been by different persons called the son, nephew, and grandson of Rev. Stephen Bachiler, first pastor of Hampton, and this last is the more common tradition in that town ; yet this is not certain, as the Rev. Stephen was an elderly man on coming to this country ; is not known to have had any sons here (see Sanborn family), and returned to England in 1656 or '57, where he d., at the age of 100. Another supposition makes " John Batchellor," of Salem, Mass., the common ancestor of the Sanbornton families. He came from Dor- setshire, Eng., "adın. to the church" in Salem, "June 23, 1639"; " freeman, 1640"; " d. 1646." " Ilis descendants write Batchel- der." William4 [1] m. Mary Burley, of Stratham, dan. of David (see) ; moved to this town in 1788; settled as a farmer, first on the Eben Chase (now Jas. Burley) place, near the Meadow school-house ; moved to the edge of Meredith (present Benj. C. B.'s, ou the hill), in Oct., 1804 ; back to Sanbornton, where now bis son Josiah, in 1816, and there d., June 1, 18-16, in his 82d year. She had d. March 17, 1830, ae. 63. [His sister (I.) Hannah, b. Nov. 9 (8), 1866, ae. 79. She d. Oct. 12, 1870, ae. 78-7. They were both " very good pions people." He was a great lover of chil- dren, and kind in sickness and death. Could turn his hand to many kinds of work, and framed his own house, though chiefly a farmer. Children :

68. JOSEPH BURLEIGH, b. April 22, 1837; learned the printers' trade, and became foreman in the Democrat ottice at Laconia; attended the Law School of Harvard University one term, but, returning to New Hampshire, was after- wards printer, proprietor, and editor of the Luconia Democrat for six years, Jan. 1, 1862, to Jan. 1, 1868, being known as the youngest editor in New Hampshire; was then. for several years, proprietor of the Railway Steam Job Printing Works, 159 Washington St., Boston. He m. Martha Aun Sauborn, of Laconia, oldest dau. of B. M. Sanborn, June 7, 1837. Ile possessed untiring business energy. but d. of consumption. in S. at the house of [65], May 2, 1878, ue. 41. Was a respected member of the Masonic and Odd Fellows organizations. No children.

Ile m. Mahala Martin Putnam, dan. of Benjamin E. und Deborah (Durgan) Putnam, Oct. 2, 1853, who was b. May 2, 1828, in Rum- ford, Me. Ile is an earnest, practical friend of education. Children :

Aug. 5, 1800, in Meredith, the son of Dearborn Bachelder, of M., who was afterwards a hotel keeper in Epsom, and no relation to the other Batchelder families of Sanbornton, so far as known. He m. Sarah V. Dolloff, who was b. June 20, 1801, in New Hampton ; moved from N. II. to this town about 1822 ; owned the last farm in town, on the turnpike, now occupied by Wiggin Gil- man (1876) ; went to Phillips, Me., about 1850, and there d., July, 1869 (?). She also d. Aug. 9, 1872, in Phillips, ae. 71. Children :
