Mary Elkins, dan. of Peters (see p. 264 [6]), Ang. 20, 1789 ( Woodman) ; is said to have built the first house in the village of Tiltou (i. e., at the Bridge proper), site in rear of the present hotel ; built, also, in company with Mr. Tilton, a blacksmith's and seythe shop, where now the new grist-mill, and was crushed by its water wheel, from which he was cutting the ice, and killed instantly, Jan. 22, 1805. .. 131. PETER ELKINS, b. Ang. 12, 1792; went to Haverhill, Mass., at the age of thirteen, and commenced his trade, as a blacksmith, with Thomas Runnels, whose dau., Betsey (b. March 12, 1798), he in., Aug. 31, 1817. They lived in Amherst, South Merrimack, Cincinnati, O., and Covington, Ky., whence ret. to Bradford, Mass., in 1837, and celebrated their " golden wedding," Aug. 31, Is67. She d. Oct. 6, 1875, with her dau., at Milford, ae. 77-7. He d. Aug. 8, 1876, in Bradford, ac. 84. Children (second consins of the author) : - 1. Sophia Ruunels, b. Aug. 16, 1818; m. Rev. William Rogers Chamberlin, Dec. 24, 1841, in South Merrimack. He was b. Nov. 2, 1816, in Brooktickt; studied with Dr. A. A. Miner, of Methuen; commenced preaching in. 1850; was first settled as pastor of the Universalist Church in Dightou, Mass., 1843; a missionary in Virginia, Kentucky, and Tennessee, one or two years, travel- ling 5,000 miles on horseback; preached and res'd. in Cincinnati and Tilany, O., in Dubuque, Vintou, and Council Bluffs, Ia. ; and tually, three and one half years, as pastor of the Union Church, in Clinton, N. 146. JONATHAN2, Jr., on the " Association Test." Whence the family came to Sanbornton is yet unknown. The tendency of the danghters of this one [146] to marry with the sons of Joseph2 [7], would indicate an intimacy aud possible relationship with the I. branch ; it so, he probably hailed from Stratham. He settled in this town, west of the later Clark's Corner; m. Sarah Morrison, dau. of Bradbury3 (see p. 495 [17]) ; was familiarly called " Trucky," or " Trundle," on account of his diminutive form ; and d. Dec. 11, 1798. She probably d., his widow (J. 165. TIMOTHY SMITH, who was here before the Revolutionary war, being the only remaining one of the four Smiths in Sanbornton who signed the " Association "Test" ! (See [19], [124], and [146].) Nothing further is known of him, except that he lived, died ( Fcb. 11, 1812), and was buried west of the present Obadiah Eastman place (Steele's Ilill), Site 1, Lot 25, 2d Div. Children (t. r.) :


166. EZEKIEL GILMAN, b. Feb. 10, 1771; m. Hanuah Robinson, Nov. 11, 1795 (Crockett) ; first settled near his father's, where now O. Eastinan (as above) ; rem. to Rumney, and d. there, or in Wentworth.

Oct. 30, 1943; was a dry-goods clerk in Boston seven years : has since been in the same brauch of business at Franklin Falls, Irius of Smith & Woodman (1877) and Geo. P. Gale & Co. (1878). He m. Margaret Look, of Boston, Sept. 21, 1872, who d. March 18, 1875. No chil- dren. 3. Melinda Taylor, b. Dec. 19, 1851; m. Silas W. Curtis, of White River Village, Vt , Nov. 24, 1870. Regliment, for three months; next In the 8th N. 11. Regiment, and finally in the 20 N. H. Cavalry, till the close of the war. He m. Mary Aun llaniford, of New Hampton, at Hill (Rev. Mr. Wright), July 4, 1870; was in the express business at Tilton (1879), having previously driven the Tilton and New lamp- ton stage through Sanbornton. Child : - 1. Frank Mouroe, b. 215. CHRISTOPHER5 SMITHI (Benjamin4, John3, Jolin2, John1) was b. Oct. 20, 1736, in Hampton (?), the families of his ancestors having early settled, and being " located at different times in Hampton and North Hampton." Ile was an ollicer in the Revolutionary war, a thor- ouglily good man, and deacon of the Congregational Church in North H. for nearly thirty-three years, where he d., Dee. 7, 1814, de. 78-2. No other family of Smiths in Sanbornton ean, as yet, be traced back so far (see above). He m., 1st, Mary Page, who was b. March 20, 1737, and d. March, 1778, ae. 41 ; m., 2d., Abigail Cilley. " Most of his children settled in the interior of the State," and four, as below given, found their way to Sanbornton :
