* A pleasing incident is related of the adoption of this child. Rev Mr. Woodman had said, at its mother's funeral, " The Lord will raise up some one to be a mother to this little girl " (now less than two months old). Mrs. Piper, on returning house that night, was sure it could not bo herself, for she had three little ones of her own; but early the next morning her vigorous direction way: "Sir " (addressing her husband), " put the saddle on the horse; I must go down to Mr. Mason's." She brought back the motherless linle one, who was ever after treated as one of her family, aud pre- sented with a silver spoon and beads at eighteen, as were her own daughters.

34. NATHANIEL. Surrn, b. June 10, 1823: was a hackman in Boston after 1864. Had twice been in California, in all twelve years; enlisted there, and performed garrison duty three years; now res. in Belmont (1880). He m. Christina B. McDowell, Oct. 29, 1868, in Boston. She was b. Aug. 1, 1838, in Churchville, Nova Scotia. Children : - 1. Ellen Jane, b. Aug. 20, 1871. 2. Frank Smith, b. Feb. 16, 1873, d., suddenly, May 3, 1876, ae. 3-3. 3. Johu Dauiel, b. Bar- ney, of Grafton, Dec. 12. 1852, in G., who was b. April 12, 1829, and d. Oct. 18, 1864, ac. 35-5. He was in., 2d, to Sarah Emeline Kilburn, March 8, 1866, who was the daughter of Jedidiah Kilburn, and born in Hawke (Danville), Oct. 17, 1836. Children, b. in Upper Gilmanton ( Belmont) : - 1. DANIEL M.5 [25] (Nathaniel4, Stephen3, etc.), lived in San- bornton on the first Stephen Piper place [31] till the fall of 1862, after the burning of his house, when he rem. to Salisbury, and there d., Jan. 11, 1869, in his 67th year. A sermon to his memory was preached in the 1st Baptist meeting-house of this town, by Rev. Charles A. Cooke, Feb. 7, 1869, from 2d Cor v. 1, and by this we learn that he was strongly convicted and converted in 1837, and ** soon after, on the first Sabbath of December, was buried in the ordinance of baptism, together with nineteen others, by Rev. Mr. Buek, and brought into the fellowship and communion of the church." He had m. Nancy T. Hersey, dau. of Williamn (see p. 340 [33]), Out. 16, 1823 (Bodwell). Children :
