GENEALOGIES. - SMITHI.

He used to walk from Epping to work at " clearing," and at one time, dividing a willow cane, with which he had been travelling, into four parts, he stuck them up near the log-house he was building, and one of those pieces became the famous " big willow-tree," which was still standing near his old homestead (Bay Meeting-house Road) until 1880 ! Having finished and furnished (?) his house, as above, he finally moved up his family on an ox-sled, in the winter of 1775-76, when his son Elisha was six years old. He was thus in town to sign the " Associa- tion Test" the next summer. At the time of his removal his wife was an invalid, riding on a bed, expecting and " wishing ouly to be buried in Sanbornton "; but she soon after wonderfully improved, lived many years, and finally died, of dropsy, Nov. 12, 1819. He had d. March 12, 1811, ac. 88 (78) ; was a man of sterling integrity and untiring enterprise, whose influence, personally, and through his numerous .and respectable descendants, has proved a power in the Bay com- munity through all the century. He built the saw and grist mill ou Black Cat Brook, just north of the late Maj. Zebulon Smith's (see Mills), and originally gave to each of his six sons 100 acres of land. Had also, by all accounts, seven daughters, two of whose names seem irrecoverably lost. In the absenec of complete records, the following list of his children, after much labor and inquiry, is as nearly correct, in names and order, as we can make it :

20. MERCY (" Marcy"), b. Aug. 16, 1746; m. Bracket Johnston, Sen. (see p. 408 [1]). (she has been usually regarded as the oldest child of [19], yet unless the earlier of his two birth dates be assumed as correct, she must rather have been his sister, a supposition favored by the disparity in the ages of the oldest and youngest of his children, unless Lydia Norris was his 2d wife. This birth date of [20] is undoubted, as taken from the old Bible of the Johnston family.)

21. A daughter, b. 1750 (?) ; m. - Brown, and res'd. a short time at the Gilman place, on "the Sands," lower Bay shore.

22. A daughter, b. 1755 (?) ; m. - Heath, and rem. to Canada.

23. LYDIA, b. 1759 (?) ; in. Samuel Folsom, son of Rev. Nicholas, of Mer- edith ; settled on the late Benjamin Batchelder place (edge of Meredith), and rem. thence to Groton.

25. BENJAMIN, b. 1763; m. Elsie Woodinan, dau. of Capt. Joshua (see) ; received his settlement (one hundred acres) on south end of the home lot. No. 18, 2d Div., building the original house of the late Alfred Burleigh, but rein. to Belmont ( Belfast), Me., prior to 1814, where both d. Their ohlest son was : - 1. Benjamin.
