58. JOSHUA5 [35] (John+, Joshua3, etc. ), m. Huldah Hilliard (or Halliard), at Keusington, July 9, 1788, who was b. July 5, 1768, and d. April 1, 1850, of palsy, in her 82d year. He first settled in K., then in Rochester, and came thence to Sanbornton in 1798 ; stopped at his brother David's ; left there his oldest son, while he returned to Kensington, and six months after moved up his family. Built the first house, where now J. T. Durgin lives (Sanborn Rond), and there continued till the widow of his brother Joseph came to town, in 1813. Relinquishing that place to her, he then finally settled where his son (Jolm), grandson, and great-grandson have since res'd. He bad the town clerk's office for twenty successive years at both his homes ; was a " beautiful penman," and drew the plan of the town, as originally laid out, which is now in the town clerk's office. He was a shoemaker by trade, but principally, by profession and practice, a school-teacher. He kept the school in the present Sanborn Road District - house then east of the present - for twenty-one winters in succession ; hence called " Master Lane." He d. Sept 1, 1829, ae. 67. The evidence has more recently come to hand, from the mounted plans in the State House, at Coneord, that he made the surveys of Sanbornton, and at least seven others of the neighboring towns, for " Carrigain's Map." in 1805, " an extraordinary amount of work to be assigned to one man." His valuable " Memorandum of Daily Occurrences," from the time he began keeping house, Nov. 13, 1788, until within four days of his death, has also lately been produced by his granddaughters [143] and [150]. 94. JOHN CLIFFORD, b. Oct. 16, 1823; had a rare natural talent as an artist, and had just completed his trade as a lithographer, in Boston, when consumption assailed him, induced by bathing, the summer before his death. Having left B. the April previously, he d. in Sanbornton, July 31, 1847, in his 24th year.


95. JOSEPH CUMMINGS, b. Sept 8, 1825; was a bookkeeper for six years in a wholesale wooden-ware house, Boston, aud about to enter partnership with Mr. Enoch Wakefield lle was m., ou his death-bed, at S., to Sarah M. Sar- gent, of Malden, May 2, 1852 (Bodwell), and d. June 17, 1852, of internal abscess, in his 27th year.

135. WARREN LOVEJOY, b. Ang. 31, 1805; went to Hampstead at the age of 14, and was there apprenticed to a manufacturer and tanner; afterwards clerk iu a country store, and merchant. He mn. Sally C., dau. of Dr. Joshua Sawyer, of H., Sept. 23, 1827; represented the town of Hampstead in the New Hampshire Legislature, 1841-42, and the latter year rem to Manchester, going into the West India goods trade. fle had been deputy U. S. marshal. under President Van Buren; was postmaster in Manchester, nuder President Polk, 1845; mayor of the city, 1849; insurance commissioner, 1851; and deputy sheriff for Hillsborough and other counties, 1853-55. " He always filled, with great acceptance, the offlees he held, and from their number can be deduced his popularity " (" History of Manchester," pp. 416, 417). He d. in M., March 4, 1861, ac. 55-6. Children : - 1. Daniel Warren, b. Jan. 15. 1829 ; m. Julia Aun Dearboru, dau. of Capt. Nathaniel, of Deerfield, March 11, 1852; is cash- ier of the City National Bank, Manchester; also treasurer of the City Savings Bank; and treasurer of Hillsborough County, in 1874. He has been in the banking business 23 years (1878). She d Sept. 13, 1873. Children : - I. Jnlla Grace, b. July 3, 1861. II. Charlotte Maud, b. Nov. 19, 1863. 2. Henry Perkins, b. Jan. 22, 1832; m. Rachel R. Cox, Dec. 11, 1851, aud d. Sept. 2, 1872, ne. 40-7. She is also deceased. 3, 4. William Brainard aud Abbie Patten, b. Nov. 7, 1839. The former m. Mary T., dan. of William Minot, of Haverhill, Mass., 1862; ocenpation, banking, being clerk and teller of the Amoskeag National Bank, Manchester, for 12 years. He was a prom- inent Mason and Odd Fellow, "occupying all important positions connected with those associations with credit and honor"; d. Nov. 4, 1872, ac. 33. She d. Sept. 19, 1869. Children : - I.
