He was justice of the peace about thirty years, - a man in whom great confidence was reposed. 97. DAVID, b. July 8, 1805; m. Olive Knowlton (see p. 425 [8]), Aug. 23, 1834 (Bodwell) ; was first, after marriage, a sawmill tender in Littleton aud Bristol five years ; settled in the northeast corner of this town, Jan., 1841 (Lot No. 21, 2d Div. ), on a remnant of land bonght and cleared up by hils father, for which $100 was paid. on the supposition that there might be thirty aeres, though there proved to be 1141 He here set out the celebrated " Sanbornton grapevine," from a slip of Dr. Carr's, in the spring of 1849. It has some years yielded a large prout, and one year $600! The monument erected by himself and son-in-law [1], in the new Bay Cemetery, is one of the finest in town, though by a favoring Providence it remained chiefly a cenotaph till her lamented death, after a long and patiently endured sickness, May 30, 1880, in her 76th year. Children : - 1. Ruth Knowlton, b. March 30, 1836; m. Joseph Noah Sanborn (2d wife), Feb. 27, 1802. He is of the Meredith stock of san- borns, "John Branch," if with this pedigree (Joseph N.", Nathaniel7, Stephen", Nathaniel, etc., sve p. 689 [719]) ; was b. In M., March 6, 1836; had In., Ist, Esther Stockbridge; has been a farmer and extensive fruit raiser with his father-in-law (as above) since 1863. JACOB SMITH is known to have come from Epping in com- pany with Satehel Clark and Jolin Thorn, - all young men, - and to have made, with them, the first elearing, a little west of the Tin Cor- ner, probably on what has since been the Smith farm, as their camp is said to have been near the site of the present cemetery (see Sketches of First Settlers), Lot No. 67, 2d Div. He soon after in. Betsey Cass, and settled.on his "clearing," so as to be established here Jan. 8, 1768, for the signing of the early " Petition " of that date. Ile was also here to sign the " Test " of 1776, and d. Oct. 27, 1807 ; was titled " Lieut." . His wife d. Jan. 28, 1804. Children :
