THE LOVEJOY FAMILY.
1. JOHN LOVEJOY was a freeman, in Andover, Mass., 1673, and d. Nov., 1690. having five sons, who settled in Andover, as follows :

JOSHUA LOVEJOY, Esq., who rem. to Sanbornton from Amherst, was b. 1744, and was probably a grandson of one of the above brothers, as he lived in Andover, Mass., as late as 1778, though his family is also said to have been of Scotch extraction, and himself to have been de- seended from a sister of " Lord Stirling, one of the early governors " of Virginia (?). He was a soldier ; first in the old French war, when ouly 16 years of age, serving near its close ; also in the war of the Revolution, " an officer, standing close by Gen. Warren when he fell," on Bunker Ilill, and hence naming one of his sons [12] after that hero. He had been a deacon of the Congregational Church in Amherst, and took a letter to the church in this town, which was accepted Oct. 9, 1808, with that of his wife, though 1794 was the probable year of their removal hither. They settled just west of the Square, on the Sanborn place, since and still occupied by the family of Noah Eastinan, Esq. Ile d. Jan. 28. 1832, in his 88th year. . He m. Sarah Perkins, who was also b. in 1744, and d. May 3, 1828, in the 84th year of her age. Children :

JOSHUAº [8] (Joshua4), had preceded his father to this part of the State, and was first established as a merchant at Meredith Bridge ; rem. to Western New York ( Manlins and Skeneatles), 1803 or 1804 ; thence to the Genesee River, 180G ; finally to Buffalo, Jan., 1811, in all which places he was engaged in mercantile pursuits and at Buttalo commercially, on the Lakes. He took an active part iu the war of 1812, and was in the battle of Black Rock, July, 1813. He had m., 1st, Mrs. Sarah (Johnson) Kimball, 1798-99. She was the dan. of Caleb Johnson ; b., in Hampstead, Oct. 21, 1771 ; m., Ist, Asa II. Kimball, of Burlington, Vt., 1794 ( who d. two years after, leaving one son), and was killed by the Indians while alone in her home, at the burning of Buffalo, Dec. 13, 1813. ae. 42-2 (one account adds because she was reluctant to give up to the savages a fancy shawl in her possession). Her remains were mostly consumed with the build- ing, a small portion being afterwards found and buried, with those of her sister, at Caledonia, N. Y. He m., 2d, Mrs. Sarah Ferris, of Saratoga County, N. Y., 1815, and himself d. in New York City, after protracted illness, Aug., 1824. ac. 53-4. Children :
- 18. HENRY J . b. March 20, 1800, at Meredith Bridge. He claimed to have seen the battle of Black Rock. with his father, with whom he res'd. till his death. He m. Eliza Osmer, July, 1831, and for nearly forty years pursued the business of surveyor and civil engineer, in Buffalo, N. Y., being city surveyor, for 15 years, from 1841. He d. May 29, 1872, ue. 72-2. Two of his daughters were teachers in the public schools of Buffalo, 1872. Family residence, 162 Swan Street. Children: - 1 Mary C., and three others, names not received.

22. ANDREW? [9] (Joshma1), in. Mary Taylor, dan. of Esq. Nathan (see), Feb. 8, 1801 (Woodman), and was an extensive trader and business man at the Square for several years, commencing as early as 1796, till broken up during the war of 1815. He did by far the largest mercantile business ever carried on in town, succeeding to the three- storied Ward house as his residence, and building a store, both for wholesale and retail trade, just above, on site of the present dwelling of Rev. M. T. Ruunels. In the different departments of his business - including potash factory, distillery, slaughter-honse - and as team- sters on the road, he gave constant employment to thirty meu. Many people from adjoining towns then came to Sanbornton Square for trade. and the street, in winter, woukl often be full of merchants and others from the upper towus, in their pungs and double sleighs, who had conte for their stocks of goods, with produce for exchange. 23. HANNA BATCHELDER, b. March 18, 1504; m. Thomas Weston Gil- more, then of Goshen. Nov. 17, 1822 (Bodwell). He was b. March 27, 1794, in Amherst, the oldest of the eight children of Thomas and Tabitha (Wilkins) Gilmore; first came from Boscawen to this town, Dec. 10, 18.8; commenced his apprenticeship with Mr. Lovejoy [22], succeeded to the ownership of his establishment, and there continued till 1822; then In Goshen tid 1526, and res'd. in Newport till his death, July 27, 1875, ac. 81-4. He retired from active mercantile life in 1831. "Hlis yard-stick was always three feet in length, and his pound, avoirdupois, comprised sixteen full ounces; a liberal coutributor to all good causes; was without subterfuge, evasion, or double dealing; his many public trusts were well and honorably discharged," being clerk of the courts of judicature and common pleas, for Sullivan County, trom 1833 till 1858, and grantee, director, and (after 1856) president of the Sugar River, and, subsequently, National Bank. She d. June 8, 1847, ae. 43-3, and he was in., 2d, by Rev. John Woods, to Mrs. Marla (Southworth) Forsaith, March 27, 1851. Children : - 1. Thomas Addison (Glimore), b. Oct. 1, 1823, in Goshen ; was m. to Helen Mar Clarke, April 21, 1859, at Claremont, by Rt. Rev. Carlton Chase ; served in the war ( Red River campaign) ; was afterwards a brilliant lecturer upon the scenes he had passed through (also during the service a ready and acceptable newspaper correspondent), and flually a clerk in the Treasury Department, Washington City, 1872, till his death, 1876 (?). Children : - I. Mary Leonard, b. June 25, 1860, in Claremont. II. Harry Westou, b. Nov. 12, 1864, in Orford. III. Ellis Clarke, b. May 21, 1871, in Washington, D. C. 2. Quincy Adams, b. March 1, 1825, in Goshen; was m. to Anu Maria Wilmarth, by Rev. Ilenry Cummings, Jan. 8, 1857. Children : - I. Marcia, b. Oct. 8, 1859, in Grinell, Ia. II. Thomas Weston, b. Oct. +, 1802. ILI., IV. 27. MARY, b. April 9, 1814; in. Tarrent Augustus Perkins, M. D., son of Roger E. Perkins, of Hopkinton, April 11, 1833, in Canada East, who served as brigade surgeon ou Gen. Cox's staff. in Western Virginia, at the commence- ment of the Rebellion, and is now settled at Tremont. Tazewell County, III. Children : - 1. Marlaud Leslie (Perkins), b. May 31, 1830; left his law office in Chicago, at the first breaking out of the war, and served his country three years as captain in the 9th Illinois Cavalry; was judge advocate ou Gen- C. Washburne's staff, and after being mastered out was judge of the civil commission, in Memphis, Teun. Leaving thus a good military record, he resmed the practice of his profession in Chicago, and there continued till his death, Sept. 12, 1877, ac. 41-4. 2. Clara H., b. Sept. 9, 1838; m. -- M'Honey, teacher and editor, in Chicago. Five children. 3. James, b. Sept. 27, 1842, d. Jun. 16, 1876, ac. 33-4. 4. Myra, b. Dec. 14, 1845, was a music teacher in Tremout and Pekin, III. (1878).
