740. DANIEL BARTLETT, b. Nov. 28, 1834; enlisted in the 4th N. H. Regi- ment, Company II, Aug., 1861; was at Hilton Head; had two attacks of fever during nine mouths, from which partially recovered, but d. of consumption, at Fernandina, Fla., Sept 12, 1862, in his 28th year, having been left behind by his regiment, and hence breathing his last in the hospital of the 9th Maiue Regiment. His intimate friend, Moses E. Southworth, wrote a tribute to his memory (Concord Statesman, Nov. 27, 1862), with touching allusions to his character as a sou, brother, friend, and Christian soldier. Last lines :

741. BENJAMIN GILE, b. Oct. 10, 1836; was a watchman in factory at Wal- tham, Mass. ; was drowned, by the capsizing of a boat, in W., July 14, 1859, in his 23d year. He was of a lovely and excellent disposition, and especially kind and dutiful towards his parents.

749. WALDRON7 [747] (Zadoch, Abiather5, etc.), was a tanner with his father, though he had commenced preaching at the age of 21. I'os- sessed strong and active powers of mind, a very retentive memory, and a rich fund of anecdote. With great versatility of talent and genius, he could accomplish anything that he wished, from the teaching of music to mechanical work. An able minister of the Christian persua- sion, he labored at several places in this State, though never perma- mently, and travelled at one time to Rhode Island. He was also a botanic physician. But the crown of his life was his great moral and Christian excellence. He m. Lucy Andrews, of Windsor, 1819 ; res'd. in Sanbornton sixteen years, then in Windsor, sixteen, from 1835 till 1×51, and lastly in Warner, till his death, April 13, 1875, ac. 80 (?). Child :
750. GILMIAN CLIFFORD, b. June 5, 1820, in Sanborntou ; m. Sarah N. Foster, of Keene, April 4, 1846, and d. April 16, 1835, in his 35th year. She d. 1871. No children.

751. JEREMIAH GIL.MIANG (John5, Ens. John4, Richard3, Johu2, Jolin1), was b. 1777, being the third son and child of John5, of New Market, and Sarah Gilman. Ilis father, though the brother of two grantees, [5] and [17], was not himself a grantee. He was the half- brother of Sarah Bartlett, who m. John Lane (see p. 440 [142]), used to claimu no relationship with the other Sanborns of town, but his con- nection with most of themu is now established by the above pedigree. He came from Lee, - and Portsmouth, - where he had served his time as a saddler, which business he carried on at the Square, in the dwelling-house built and occupied by himself, and now owned (1881) by Samuel P. Calef, Esq. Hle m. Abigail (Nabby) Perkins, March 8, 1808 (Bodwell), who was the dan. of Abigail (Tilton) Perkins, and granddaughter of Dea. N. Tilton (see). half years - at Sanboruton Square; commeuced at the Bridge, March 14, 1812, and taught in the Sanbornton Academy three and one half years; was then professor of mathematies, natural seience, and English literature, from Sept. 3, 1845, three years, being associated six months with Rev. Joseph Augustus Adams, and the remainder of the time with Rev. Richard S. Rust, as princi- pals of the N. H. Conference Seminary, of which he was also principal one term, 1847-48. He thus res'd. " nine years within the limits of Sauborutou, save a few days, being superintending school commitee elght years, and represent- ative of the town 1845-46." He was afterwards principal of the Tubbs Union Academy, Washington, and lastly a teacher lu Hopkinton, where he d., Jan. 14, 1871, ae. 71-6. He was the author of several text-books, hils " Analytical Grammar " passing through eight editions, and was diligently employed dur- ing his last days - while also postmaster at Hopkinton - in bringing very nearly to a completion the "Sanborn Genealogies." 1. PETER SANDERS, the common ancestor of all bearing the name in town, so far as known, was b. in Haverhill, Mass., 1730, and set- tled here about 1777, on Lot No. 46, 1st Div., the present Freeman

We here insert a copy of his will, as affording us a specimen of ancient Sanbornton documents of this kind, noting. also, its special provisions after the names of his several children, for which, as well as for their number and order, we are indebted to the will itself: " In the name of God, Amen. I, Peter Saunders, of Sanborn- tou, in the State of New Hampshire, county of Stratford, Husbandman, being sick and weak of body, but of sound mind and memory, know- ing that it is appointed for all men once to die, and not knowing how soon it may be my case, do make this, my last Will and Testament. And in the first place I humbly give my soul to God, my Creator, hop- ing for Pardon of all my sins through the merits of Jesus Christ ; and my body I recommend to decent burial, according to the discretion of my Executor, hereinafter named, hoping in the Redemption to Eternal Life. My worldly estate I give, devise, and dispose in the following manner and form, - that is to say, Imprimis : My will is that all my just debts and funeral charges be paid as soon after iny decease as may be done with convenience, by my Executor, out of my estate." (Then follow the several items, devising to wife and children as below.) This will was " signed, sealed, published, and declared," in presence of Jolin Samborn and Ebenezer Gove, "Sept. 28, 1786." He d. 1790, ae. 60. He had m. Abigail Johnson, who d. Aug. 12, 1798. Hence in the will : " 'To Abigail, my beloved wife, the use of my dwelling- house, barn, goods, furniture, and the improvement of all my land ; also one cow aud two sheep, all which she is to have at her disposal as long as she shall remain my widow ; then to return to my three youngest sons in the proportion of their bequests." 24. WILLIAM HUTCHINS, b. Nov. 17, 1802; was lame through life as the effect of a fever sore ou the ankle joint, when a boy. Life and limb were de- spalred of by other physielans, but Dr. Beualah Sauboru thought he could save both, if he had him a few mouths at his house. Ilence he was carried thither ou a litter, in June, and brought home ou a sled in November. He uns. Sally Reed, of Grafton, Sept. 30, 1832, who was b. July 22, 1804; was an efficient farmer aud worthy member of the Second Baptist Church about forty- Ive years; d. THE SARGENT FAMILY.
1. SAMUEL SARGENT, originally from Derry, or Windham, m. Sarah Woodman, and settled in Ilawke (now Danville). His son,
2. CHALLIS, b. July 8, 1800, in II., first came to Sanbornton Bridge in 1822, as a shoemaker, having learned his trade, in Hampstead, of Jesse Gordon (see Conner Fam., p. 179 [15]). He has lived at the Bridge continuously, till the present (1881), except one year in West Boscawen, being well known as an earnest, consistent Christian of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He m., 1st, Sarah Tewksbury, of Hampstead, 1821, who d., in S., June 22, 1838, of consumption, ae. 42-4; m., 2d, Polly Forrest, of Northfield, Sept., 1838, who d. Nov. 13, 1872, ae. 71-6 ; m., 3d, Mary Ann Kelley, of Franklin, March, 1874. Children :
3. JESS GORDON (t. r.), b. Aug. 5, 1823, in Boscawen; res, with his brother, uum., in Illinois (1879).
4. BENJAMIN CHASE, b. Sept. 27, 1825; m. Sarah Aun Kent, dau. of Thomas Lyford, of Northfield, Oct. 22, 1846, who was b. March 4, 1827; is now for 24 years (1879) in the dry-goods and grocery trade at Anuawan, Ill. (on the Rock Island Railroad), having previously been in California. Children : - 1. Saralı Thomas, b. Oct. 20, 1832; in. - Dart, Sept. 9, 1808. Children : - I. Jesse- Warren (Dart), b. March 22, 1870. II. Guy Jay, b. June 27, 1872. III. Sadie Sybil, b. Jan. 18, 1875. 2. Leroy Hugo (Sargent), b. 5. SUSAN HALE, b. Sept. 24, 1827; was early afflicted with blindness, but restored; in. James M. Forrest, formerly of Northfield (his 4th wife), now (1879) a farmer in Winnebago, Wis. (near Portage City). No children.
6. ISAAC, b. Sept. (?), 1829, d. Sept. + (Oct. 31), 1836, ae. 7, of dropsy on the brain.

THE SHAW FAMILY.
1. EDWARD! SHAW, of Hampton, was an original grantee of the town, eleventh on the " Petition " of 1748, and besides the two lots which he drew, Nos. 21 and 34, is said to have come in possession of several others. His only son, who is known to have been connected with Sanbornton, was,

3. JONATHAN', the supposed brother of [1], being also of Hamp- ton, and an original proprietor (fifty-fourth on the " Petition," and drawing Lots 20 and 33), was b. May, 1709 ; m. Mrs. Mary (Laue) James, of Hampton, May 20, 1755 (see Lane Family, p. 436 [5]), probably his 2d wife, as he was her 2d husband, and d. May 30, 1780, ae. 71. She d. in this town, Nov. 12, 1794, in her 75th year. Chil- dren :
4. BENJAMIN (her 4th), who was the father of Hon. Tristram Shaw, M. C. from New Hampshire.

8. JOHN" [2] (Edward1). His first coming to town was at nearly the same time with his cousin (the Hampton records make these relationships doubtful) [17], where he m. Molly Dustin, dau. of David, Sr. (see p. 246 [3]), Oct. 29, 1783 (Woodman) ; then said to be of North Hampton, where his four oldest children were b. He finally returned to Sanbornton, with his family, in the spring after the birth of' [12], who came " on horseback, at. the age of six months." This was probably the spring of 1791, though possibly of 1789 (see below). He settled and built the first house on the late Capt. James Prescott place, and there d., " of an accidental death," March 13, 1810, ac. 46, bearing the title of, "Lieut." She " inherited the courageous spirit of her aneestry," " was a woman of great personal beauty," and m., 2d, William Weeks, Esq. (see). The dates of birth first given below are most authentic, though the years in parentheses are claimed by some. Besides the following children, one d. July 11, 1796, and their youngest d. April 20, 1804, names not recorded :
