It was "his misfor- tune to be the original inventor of the Thompson furnace for the consumption of wet fuel, employed in large tanneries, and also applied to the burning of refuse cane in Southern sugar establishments. His whole later life was spent in combating hls persecutors, - lufringers of the patent, - who hastened him to his grave just on the eve of a joyful success." He m. Calista Marcia Field, dau. of Dea. Juliu, of Peterborough, Feb. 20, 1840, at her father's residence, who was b. Dec. 23, 1817, and d. at Binghamton, N. Y., May 10, 1855, ac. 37-5. He d. lu Boston, Mass., Jan. 31, 1860, ae. 46-3. 108. HOLLIS KIDDER, b. Feb. 14, 1824; has been an undertaker since the age of 14. and now carries on a business worth $4,000 aunually (1876-80), with two salesrooms in Franklin and one in Tilton. He does ouly the " thi- ishing " of coffins and caskets in his shop at home, and has thus prepared, in all, hetween three and four thousand in thiry-five years. He first boarded with and then succeeded hils brother [105], building his shop at the age of 1s (destroyed by fire, 1880), and the house now occupied by himself, in 1852. Ile has also been somewhat employed as a house carpenter, and built a small factory on the Ephraim Green mill privilege (below the Chapel), for chair stuff, broom handles, etc., which was soon after burued, at a loss of $1,500.

112. SAMUEL MARCH, b. March 14, 1819 ; m. Martha A. Clough, dau. of John, sister of the last, of Canterbury (see p. 160 [19]), Dec. 31, 1845. He succeeded his father upon the home farm, making sundry improvements, and for more than thirty years was recognized in town as one of its most useful citizens, and in all of life's relations as a most amiable and affectionate friend. "Faithful and beloved." Ile was representative, 1870-71, and president of the Sanborntou Farmers' Club at the time of his death, Dec. 2, 1872, in his 54th year. His loyalty to his church was evinced in his choosing to be buried at the Centre Cemetery, near to his "beloved pastors," and a noble granite shaft now marks his restiug-place. Children :- 1. Aun Eliza, b. May 27, 1847; m. Charles Henry Marden, Dec. 25, 1870 (Runuels). He was b.
