THE KENISTON FAMILY.


1. ALLEN KENISTON (spelled also " Kineston," " Kinerstone," and "Kenistan ") was freeman in Salem, Mass., 1642, and d. 1668.


2. JOHN, was a resident at Greenland, 1676; bad his house burned, and was killed by the Indians, April 16, 1677. Que of these was doubtless the original ancestor of the Sauboruton and Northfield families.


3. WILLIAM1, whose name appears on the "Petition " of 1768 (" Kineston "), and who must have been in Sanboruton that year, originally moved from Candia or New Market, and settled ou the slope of Colby Hill, between the present Giles place and Clark's Corner, west side of road ( Miles place), but lived there not more than three

or four years, when he rem. to Northfield, and went as a Revolutionary soldier from that town, being at the battle of Brandywine. He m. a Cilley, and d. in Northfield. Children :

He m. Sarah (Sally) Morrison, dau. of Ebenezer (see), Nor. 27, 1788 (Woodman), and was then of Northfield She d. Dec. 6, 1839, ac. 69-8. "When more than 90 years of age he gave his deposition in the ' flowage case,' Perley es. the Lake Company, his memory running back to the building of the first dam at Union Bridge with marvellous brightness and precision." In 1848 he rem. to Plymouth, and was there employed in business and farming the remainder of his life. He d., at P., Sept. 27, 1874, ac. 77-6. She there d., March 28, 1874. Children :

Whether he had other children besides the two following, whose names only appear on our town records, is uncertain. Children :

THE KIMBALL FAMILIES.


This name is the same as " Kembal" and " Kemble " in England, where ". Kimball" is hardly ever found. Several original ancestors are noted. I. Richard, an early proprietor of Watertown, Mass., freeman, 1635 ; also, II. Henry, of Watertown. freeman, 1638. Of the same family may have been III. Richard, of Ipswich, Mass., who d. in 1675, leaving a widow, four daughters, and the following sons, most of them young: 1. Henry. 2. Richard. 3. Thomas. 4. Benjamin. 5. Caleb. Also, IV. Thomas, of Ipswich, 1665, one of the first settlers of Bradford, Mass .. where he was killed by the Indians, May 3, 1676, his wife and five children (below) being taken prisoners, carried forty miles into the wilderness, but returned June 13 of the same year. These children, one of whom was probably an ancestor of the Sanbornton Kimballs of Branch I., were, 1. Joanna. 2 Thomas. 3. Joseph. 4. Priscilla. 5. John. Twenty-eight of the name had graduated at the New England colleges in 1825.

probably descended from : I. JOUN KIMBALL, an early settler of New- bury, who m. Mary Hobbs, Feb. 24, 1665, and d. Oct., 1668, leaving : 1. Mary, b. July 19, 1607. 2. John, b. Oct. 15, 1608. He (Caleb [21]) m. Hannah Noyes ; lived in Newbury, four miles from Newburyport, and had at least five children, in the following probable order :

27. THOMAS- [22] (Caleb1). m. Anna Carr, of Newbury ; came to town, as above ; succeeded Joseph Conner in the store and distillery, at the Square - living in the present Mrs. J. C. Bodwell house - until his failure in business, when he moved back to W. Newbury, prior to March, 1823, as he was then dismissed from our Congregational Church. The removal to this place of himself and brothers not only enlarged the business of the town, but added a new social element to its popu- lation. The four oklest of his children were b. in Newbury, the others here. They mostly d. in early life, and of consumption ; the town records give only eight :


28. JUDITII, b. April 8, 1795; m. Jolin Campbell, of Epsom, Nov. 15, 1816 (Bodwell) ; lived in E., and there d., leaving two children : - 1. John (Camp- bell), Jr. 2. Sally (?).


29. WILLIAM CARR, b. Oet. 25, 1797, d. (probably) April 13, 1806, ae. 8-6.


30. LEONARD WOODS, b. Feb. 25, 1800; was clerk in a hotel ou Brattle Square, Boston, Mass. ; was m., and there d.


31. CALEB, b. Oct. 19, 1803; m. and rem. to Amesbury, Mass.


32. SAMUEL C., b. March 9, 1806; in., and d. soon after.


33. THOMAS NOYES, b. May 2, 1808; in. the widow of his brother [30], and d. in two years.


34. MOSES WARREN, b. Dee. 31, 1810; settled in Hopkinton.


35. JOSEPH HORACE, b. April 26, 1813; was a printer in Boston, having learned his trade in Concord; d. early, in B.


36. CHARLES, b. Sept., 1815, d., of lung fever, March 18, 1816, ae. 6 mos. ; and "the night following, his father, awaking from a dream, composed twelve lines of poetry for his tombstone, which made so great an impression on his mind that he immediately arose and committed them to writing. They were commended by Rev. Mr. Bodwell, but never used." First two lines only, remembered by our informant :


"Beneath this silent stone is laid A frail, though bright and prattling babe."

38. JosErn: [23] (Caleb1), m. Rachel Chase, of Haverhill, Mass., Feb. 5, 1801, who was the oldest child of Josiah and Ruth ( Bradley) Chase, b. June 28, 1779. Coming to town with his brothers, he settled on the Capt. Aaron Sanborn place, near the Square, occupying houle- stead and part of the original farm, now owned by his grandson,

July 19, 1850; was graduated at the Haverhill High School, July, 1875; at Brown University, Juue, 1877 ; and at the Rochester Theological Semluary. May, 1880; is now a Baptist clergyman. 2. M. ABEL2 [26] (Caleb1), coming to town with his brothers (as above), he was first a trader, and lived on the Benjamin Colby (now vacant Leavitt) place, north end of Lot 75, 1st Div. ; next, succeeded his brother Thomas in the store business, at the Square, till his own failure, in 1827. IIe m. Dolly Spotford, of Andover; rem. finally to Dover, and there d., with his son. Children :
