waters to pledge loyalty for the Six Nations to him. When the leader of the league returned, he found the people alreadp at war. He led his braves by the side of the Tory Rang- ers and Royal Greens made up of white men who had pledged their loyalty to their chief and were led by the white man John Butler. To- gether thep burned the villages In the valley and destroyed the crops of the rebels. Many scalps were taken and there was much killing. The people of the valley trembled at the name of Thayanendaga . (Joseph Brant). who was fience and brave. He knew the tongue and the manners of the white men of high wisdom. They hated also the man John Butler and his son Walter Butler who led the men of green coats down. upon them; and they hated and feared all those who had been sent to pun- ish them.
One of the war chiefs from across the waters, leader of the English tribe and commanding the Indians, was the chlef called. General Bur- goyne. This wise man called together his warriors and told them his plan in a Council of War. He sent one of his braves with a large force of white warriors to the Lake Oswego. The warrior, Col. Barry St. Leger, would move swiftly through the val. ley after capturing Fort Stanwix, held by the rebels, and meet the Chief Burgoyne at the place called Albany on the river Hudson. Thayan- denga and his warriors became part of the first which went into the val- ley.
Moving with caution, they came to the Fort Stanwix and called to the people to surrender to the power of the White Father. The red braves chanted and danced thelr prayers to Giche Manitou to give them the 1825. swiftness of the eagle and the strength of the bear in battie. They were interrupted as a brave sent |vilie, N. GREETINGS Jessica, M. Reeves
"Hi!" Said the boy as he hurried along
To the playground yesterday, A common greeting no doubt you think,
And what any child might say.
But the sunniest smile that I ever saw
Shone out from his face and eye, And the cheer it brought to my very soul
Will stay though time goes by.
I heard him whistling a merry .tune
Loudly, and slightly off key, As he hastily scampered down the street
Careless, happy, and free.
A wee little boy with a warm, sweet smile,
And sparkling eyes of blue, Brushed the clouds from a gloomy sky
And let the sun shine through.
