By Harry A. Odell
A short history of Westport, New York, on the west shore of lake Champlain, as far as it con- cerns the Odeiis, the Lobdells, the Ferrises, the Hanchets, the Cadys and the Davises, taken from Caro- line Halstead Royce's "Bessboro" and letters from F. C. Haacker, Jean Imogene Odell, I., Harian Bird Odell and others.

my own notes, H. A. O. (Continued from last week)
CIVIL WAR
"Captain Charles Henry Davis, who married Euretta Roselthy Odeil was our best known hero In the Civil War, with Levi Lob- deil Adeli, also entitied to be a captain but refusing the position, according to his son Harlan Bird Odell; Barius Orcutt served thr- ough the war and was at the Bat- tie of Shiloh or Pittsburg Land- ing, 1862; Harlan Bird Odeii says: "He died in the eighteen-eightys; I recall father going to Chicago to be with her during the obsequy and I believe he sieeps in a Chi- cago cemetery." His wife (Eliza- beth Ann Odell) died in Newark in 1918 -- Jean Ingelow Odell, I. Alexander Eugene Adeli's dis- about Parmelia ?))

((Now some pseudo patriot who is more interested in saving some millionaire income tax than in saving the country Is going to squack "boughten Pat- riotism." This $300 at that time probably barely paid his expenses back to good health and the bat- dependents, 1864. It was little tle field, leaving nothing for his enough, considering Capt. Davis heroism and the honor they had brought to his home town; but some people would probably have had him walk back and beg his living by the way.) )

"Robert Odell purchased land? in the Iron Ore Traot in 1838. He is referred to as of Elizabethtown. He purchased and sold several par- ceis of land between 1838 and 1867. His wife Roxanna appears first in 1844. In 1869, Robert F. Odell, of Cedar Falls, Iowa and wife Roxy Ann conveyed last par- cel of land in Essex County."
But here is a poser: Wm. E. Odeli and wife Susanna R. of St. Mary's Illinois, conveyed land in Elizabethtown in 1867. (.(Who couid that have been ? Outside of this one item there are no other Odelis mentioned in ail our re- search in Westport that do not be- long to our famlly. There was a farm laborer named Odeli there when I visited Westport in 1937 but I was unable to see him.))

( (This would make him born in 1783. Probably wife, then
how
( (The date 1777 is mine taken. from a paper of RFO. The other dates are figured from the time of the census.
Haacker says apparently most of these were grandchildren. ( (If! so then grandpa RFO had brother with a family living there' then. Now this distinctly does not agree with what I remember. Grandpa wrote me he had a broth- er who visited him from Burling- ton or Bennington, Vermont. Father also spoke of this brother and said: "When they saw each other they cried." Surely someone of us should remember if any- thing was ever said that would show there was such a family, and nothing in "Bessboro" indicates
such a family.) )
Robert A. Odell appears first in, Essex Co. records In 1806, when he purchased land along Lake Cham- plain in the Bessboro Tract. ( (This is in the south part of Westport, just where Odeil's Bay is men- tioned in the minutes of the an- nual Town Meeting .of 1820.) ) He also purchased land in the Iron Ore Tract In 1812 and sold land in 1855 with his wife Permelia. In the 1800 census he had a family of two: One male between 16 - 26. One female between 16 - 26. Probably himself and wife, only. ((It seems that the census takers in 1800 classed names be- tween certain ages, as: Under 16, Between 16-26, 26-45. Over 45.
In 1820 he had four sons under 16, and he himself was 26-45. ( (If he was born In 1783, he could not have been over 16 years old when married, and our grandfather, R. F. O., was born when he was 22, and his first wife Mary was 18 or 19, but we have him born in 1777, In grandfather RFO's own hand- writing in 1857, also in a pedigree written by Judge Robert Adelbert Odeil in 1893.))
"Up from the south at break of had four son's under 16, himself
( (In 1820, he, Robert A. Odell, between 26 and 45 and one female between 16 - 26, probably his se- cond wife, Parmelia. Most of these figures check O. K. except that grandpa RFO was born in 18057 and his father Robert (Andrus) Odell was born in 1777. if he was 26-45 in 1820 he could have been born in 1777 or 1783. At that time, (still is), it was necessary to; lie about your age to hold a job. If he gave his age as 73 in 1850 he might have been fired. They had no Social Security then ,nor Unions either.
