From Hemenway's History of Middletown, Vt., page 803 is taken the following: "Capt. Joel Miner was a man of rare mental capaci- ty. Had quite a law business al- though not a lawyer. Died sud- denly in Montpelier in the fall of 1813, age 44, while attending the' Legislature. He left 'several child- ren, two of which became clergy- men, Lamson and Ovid. Joel Min- er was the third child of Gideon Miner who moved from Wood- bury, Conn. to Rutland in March 1779 and from Rutland to Middle- town in 1782. During the French and Indian War, the colonists were again at the mercy of the Indians and of the French. The Old Fort Herki- mer, Fort Kouari-a house and Į store palisaded for the protection of the settlers-was attacked by Bellettre and his Indian allies in 1757.

Benedict Arnold, directing the Continental forces in the Mohawk campaign during the Revolution- ary War, wrote to General Gates telling him of the plight of the

colonists.

" 'These infernal savages, paint- 'ed like furies, are continually har- rassing and scalping our people, and the miserable, defenceless in- habitants. Whole families of the

latter have been inhumanly butch; ered, without distinction of age or sex; and some (I am credily in- formed) have been roasted alive in the presence of the polite and hu- man British army . . This is the protection many poor deluded wretches have experienced from the British arms, who remained quietly in their homes, agreeably to General Burgoyne's proclama- tion.' "

(This quotation is from Isaac Arnold's Life of Benedict Arnold, page 153.)

Another interesting quotaion, from the New York Writer's Pro- ject, New York, "A Guide to the Empire State," tells about the in- cident of somewhat similar nature which took place during the Cher- ry Valley massacre.

Although simply touching upon some of the high points of inter- est in a study of the Mohawk Vial- ley, a brief description, history, and likewise brief discussion of the litenature of the area, the au- thor and reader can both recog- nize the wealth of the heritage of the modern generations whose an- cestors faced the dangers of the frontier and were victorious over their enemies.

The purpose of this paper has been to place before the reader scenes of interesting incidents, to discuss briefly the literature about the Mohawk Valley and to stim- ulate the mind of the reader suf- ficiently to lead him to a further study of this topic ...
