History Of Westport

By Harry A. Odell

A short history of Westport, New York, on the west shore of lake Champlain, as far as it con- cerns the Odells, the Lobdells, the Ferrises, the Hanchets, the Cadys and the Davises, taken from Caro- Ilne Halstead Royce's "Bessboro" and letters from F. C. Haacker, Jean Imogene Odell, I., Harlan Bird Odell and others. Double parenthesis (( )) my own notes, H. A. O. (Continued from last week)

diameter, but the Alder bush was so thick that one can hardly get through it. Within the last year are the dam at this place has been built up and they carry the water down the river to the Josh Smith Copy of a letter written to his step-mother by Thomas Lewis Odell in 1906. Contributed by Mill and there make electricity tc run the ore beds at Moriah, carry- ing it over the mountains via Nichol's Pond. One family lives at Nessie McGowan. Newark, Jan. 9th, 1906 My Dear Mother: the Smith Mill - heavy timber down from here to our old place where the forge stood, there is a Nearly one year has passed ing to tell you about my trip to Adirondacks. Jerome Lodbell met clearing about 10 acres - and from the river back over the Storrs lot. and Smith lot, all a wilderness. A son of Ira Daniels owns this place (except the minerals). On the' | second flat from the river he has a Sugar camp of five thousand trees, where we used to cut hay at one time and pick blackberries. No one lives here or at Meig's Fonge. The school house hasn't grown any. It don't seem possible ;. that we used to get 60 to 70 scholars in the small place, but It is much too lange now as was too small then. I found Elias Storrs living in the house that Uncle Theron built across the river from the old red house of John Lobdell. He tells me that there are seven children in the Eliazbethtown is a pretty vìl- lage. The change from there to Lobdell's Farm is not much, ex- cept the many cottages on the plains. Jerome has five children: four boys and one girl. Two of the district that draw public money but not near that many attending school. The next habitation is Ira Daniel's place. I found Mary Ann ( ?) living there. (The place is in good condition.) with her son El- boys live at home, the other two bert who married Caroline String- at Rice's Mills and do a building business. The daughter married a ham's only daughter. Mary Ann looked neat and sweet, but she had dried up to nothing. She says she remembered me but I don't think she did. son of Martin Vaughn and live on Leonard Wane Farm. They did everything to make it pleasant for me.

I visited Black River burying One day Jerome took Max and I to the Kingdom. Wie drove through New Russia. There is one ground two or three times, found my mother's grave and Austin's, house standing there. All the rest |brothers and many others. On the ruins and such timber all the way the grave of your father and two up the hill. The first house was the Ald Walcott House. There was a famlly living there, house not changed. Heavy Pine timber every- where. The house on the Hatch lot is gone and everywhere a for- est - the Willard Simonds place we found the apple trees growing in the woods, some of them loaded with fruit. I couldn't find the ore bed, the timber was so thick and the heavy growth of underbrush.

At the Kingdom one might hunt
