rectly carved or weather erosion has rendered the inscription par- .tially indistinct, causing the 3 in 43 to be read as 5.
I copied this same inscription 40 years ago and I also made the age as 45 and the Nov. 2 as Nov. 12. As I recall the inscription was somewhat illegible then.
Benjamin Fox was a son of
John C. Fox and Elizabeth Dief- endorf. He married March 8. 1818 Catherine Staats. They had children: Caroline born 1820, mar- ried Richard A. North. Record of one child, Mary Elizabeth 1839- 1841. No further data.
(a) Elizabeth born 1823 mar- ried Aaron Brower. No further re- cord.
b) Catherina born 1827, said to have moved to Chicago and died there unmarried.
(c) Staats. Married Elizabeth, daughter of Archibald Fox. They had a son Edward born 1854. No further data. (d) Margaret. Said to have married a Wagner. No further da- tin
The widow of John C. Fox mar- ried as second husband Jos. G. Klock No issue.
The above John C .Fox should not be confused with another John Fox also a son of a Chi-topher Fox, the births and deaths -" these two Johns being fairly close to- | gether. Lineage of this latter John Fox is:
1. Johan Phillip Fox, born Ger- many ca 1660, Palatine Immi- grant 1710, died post 1737, mar- ried Anna Eva.
2. John Christopher Fox, born Germany ca 1685-90, died aat Ger- man Flats. N. Y. 1766-7, Bur- netsfield Patentee 1723, married 1710-11 Johaanna Elizabeth Cur- ring.

The above Christopher Philip Fox is the Capt. Christopher Fox who Beers in his history of Fulton and Montgomery Counties, N. Y. states was killed at the Bat- tle of Oriskany. Beers was quite successful in killing him histori- cally, but not otherwise. He mar- ried a second wife after Oriskany and raised three sons, Christopher C., David and Frederick, the lat- ter my great grandfather and who married Anna Fox, eldest daughter of John C. Fox and Elizabeth Diefendorf.

(Continued from last week) Degirous of locating the exact spot, I visited several other peo- ple who had lived all their lives in the vicinity of that field, one a woman over ninety years of age who was born on a farm adjoining the pointed out field. Not one had ever heard of the church. Since the church has never been written up in any history of Fulton or Montgomery counties, the only re- daining sources of information are maps of the county and records in the County Clerk's office.
The church is described as be- ing in the town of Amsterdam and county of Montgomery and so it was until April 18, 1838, the date upon which Fulton county was separated from Montgomery coun- ty and that part of the town of Amsterdam north of the northern boundary of Montgomery county and which fell within the limits of Fulton county became the town of Perth. The earliest deed on re- cord for the farm which contains the field Mr. Joslin pointed out as having been the church field is dated May 12, 1823 and by it, Lewis M. Bostwick and Deborah, his wife of the town of Amster- dam deeded this farm to Jacob Banta of the same place. The deed describes the boundaries of the farm and then states that it has "seventy acre excepting one quar- ter of an acre on which the Ban- tist meeting house is now situat- ed." This locates the farm but it is not yet narrowed down to the field in question. It so happens that only one field of this far is on the west side of the road and we find that on Dec. 10, 1831, Henry Bonfoy of the town of Win- quit claim deed to David Atkins of the town of Amsterdam for $10.00 for the part of this west field which contained the church. The church
on April 18, 1832, many years af- ter its beginning. It may be that it was incorporated in order to sell the property and that the mem-
At this time David Atkins own- ed the church lot and the land surrounding it and on August 6, 1832, he and his wife, Hannah gave a quit claim deed to the above mentioned trustees, for $10, of the church lot. The property is described as follows: Beginning on the west side of the road
leading from Amsterdam to Broadalbin, 25 links north of the north-east corner of the Six Prin- ciple . Baptist Meeting House, run- ning south 2 chains, west 1 chain, 25 links, north 2 chains, east 1 chain, 25 links to the place of
beginning, being one quarter acre. No further mention ofthis church appears anywhere in the county records.
These Pleasant Valley settlers formed a society there on May 2, 1818, called the Palatine branch of the Six Principle Baptist Church of Amsterdam. It was probably the first organization of a religious nature in that locality. The ministers who preached to them were Revs. Ezra Allen, James T. Joslin and William Groom. A reorganization as an in- dependent church took place June 10, 1830, consisting of 39 mem- bers who adopted the title of "The Six Principle Baptist Church of Christ. Church .. These four denomina- tions were to have rights to the Union Church according to their respective subscriptions that were of
.-- -- paid for erecting the place worship. The Six Principle Bap- tists of Rockwood soon lost their - identity and became merged with the regular Baptists when the Otsego Baptist Association was formed, March 20, 1834, only two members refusing to abandon the old faith. The Union Church, gen- erally called the Baptist Church, s which was built " in 1833"; still stands in Rockwood' on', the hill
n close by the cemetery. An old pic- ture shows it to have been very beautiful building with a
tall spire but in the eighteen nineties the spire was taken down and it was modernized into. its present barn like appearance. On July 31, 1930 the congregation dis- solved since which time the build- h ing has become sadly dilapidated. The sweet sounding bell has been put in the tower of the Emmanu- el Baptist Church of Gloversville. The Rockwood Baptist ' Church was the mother church of the First Baptist Church of Glovers- ville.
