There are a few things that the author, Codman Hislop, might have made a little clearer. In writing of the Palatines, he ignores the fact that those who came to New York in the 1710 immigration had a defi- nite covenant prepared by the British attorney general, approved by the board of trade, the cabinet and Queen Ann. It was read to the Pala- tine leaders in German and then 'signed by them.
Different interpretations of the covenant of 1709 were 'bound to arise from the circumstances of its for- mation but that "each person was to receive forty acres of land" was a definite promise that no attempt was ever made to fulfili. The author" seems to think that this promise oniy existed in the minds of the Palatines. 7
Mr. Hislop's sizing up of the per- sonal characteristics of Governor Hunter, Livingston, the Patroon, John Canrad Weiser and William Johnson are pretty true to the his- torical records. Gov. Hunter was a scholar with no business or execu- tive experience and was at a disad- vantage when he clashed with strong characters like Livingston and Weiser. Hunter and Weiser lost their personal fortunes and influence but the Schoharie and Mohawk val- leys profited by the clash over land and better terms were given the Pal- atines by Hunter's successor. Liv-, ingston's "acquisitiveness" is well portrayed and Johnson's private life is laid wide open.
The author is in error about the Palatines patronizing the Johnson grist mill at Fort Johnson. They had at least two grist mills in the Scho- harie valley and four or more in the Mohawk valley before Johnson® came to America. Their settlements were so far away from Fort Johnson to patronime that mili. And the original IJohnson patent was west of Kayder- osseras creek. No part of it was east of that stream until years after- wards when Johnson purchased the lands and tavern of one Joseph Cle- ment and removed the tavern which Johnson considered a great nuisance. The original Kayderosseras land grant was to Naning Heermanse and 12 others long before Johnson came to America. It is to Johnson's credit that this patent was reduced finally without an Indian war over it.
In spite of these minor errors "The Mohawk" gives the reader a good 1 picture of the tides of history and the great personalities that have made the Mohawk river countr" famous. And it brings the days of long ago right down to the current days in a delightful fashion. The more history we can have written in this popular style the better.
