FRANK

John Frank was orderly ser- geant under Capt. Michael Ittig, who was member of Assembly, 1777 and under his brother, Fred- erick Frank, who superseded Ittig after Oriskany. John FFrank was first judge in Herkimer Co. and was in the "Last Battle of Rev. War, 1783." Want the wife and children of John Frank with dates and also his brother, Frederick. Did either of these men have a daughter, Magdalena, b. 1776? Is there a published record of Ger- man Flatts births, marriages and deaths ?

her House" in Fort Plain in the early 1800's. Webster Wagner was thus a grand-nephew of Joseph 3. Was there any further connection between the earlier Fort Plain Wagner House or Wagner Tavern and the later Canajoharie Hotel Wagner ?

this Waggoner House in Minden | Staenia, of Munnsville, N. Y. Her the same as the Wagner Tavern of the toto dances?

Both of these invitations were sent to "Miss Angelica Uttamark" lor "Utemark." The earlier invi- tation reads "Annual Ball. The company of Miss Angelica Utta- mark is solicitied at the house of Mr. Joseph Waggoner, in Minden, on Friday, the 10th inst. at 1 o'clock P. M. Managers: J. Stick- ney, R. Crouse; . H. Caswell, C. Newkeark, Jr., D. B. Davis, J. W. Semon. January 1st, 1812." The other invitation reads; "Anni nl Ball. Agreeably to the usage of our predecessors, we appoint a

B all at Mr. Joseph Waggoner's in Minden, on the 26th inst. at 3 o'olook P. M. and solicit the com- pany of Miss Angelica Utermark. Managers: John Holms,

John Hackney, William Joyce, Lebbeus Doty, J. Waggoner, Jr., Henry Caswell, Minden, January 1st,' 1814,' Identity asked of any of the above managers. J. Stickney and R. Crouse were related by marriage to said Joseph 3 Wag- goner and J. Waggoner Jr., was a. son. Who were the others ? Who was Angelica Uttermark?

The Fort Plain celebration on Oct. 26, 1825 for the opening of the Erie Canal started and end- ed at the First Wagner House, "which stood on the north side of the Guard-lock and is now own- ed (i. e., in 1882) by Andrew Dunn," according to J. R. Sims in "Frontiersmen of New York, I, 402-3. Was this "First Wagner House," the same as the "Wag- ner Tavern" of the toto dances or was it the same as the "Wag- goner House in Minden' of the "balls" of 1812 and 1814 ? Or are the three to be identified as the same ?

Simms' description of the Fort Plain celebration bears repeating. 'The log procession, with martial music, Sims states, "marched from the public house cif mine host, Jos- eph Wagner, to Sand Hill where, near the church, a six pound can- non heralded the event of the day in thunder tones abroad." The program of the day included a pa- rade, salute, prayer, speeches, "a collation prepared by Mr. Joseph Wagner," and a ball in the eve- ning. "The sumptuous dinner at this first Wagner House, says Simeon Tingue, then its hotel clerk, was spread the entire length of the ball room.' Thre were "nu- merous toasts," 13 regular ones and 19 good volunteer ones, "washed down by good liquor." The Hon. Peter J. Wagner had more to do with preparing the toaasts than any other man." (Peter J. Wagner was a son of "mine hosts," Joseph 3 Waggon- er).

Note that Simms speaks of the Wagner House of the 1825 Erie Canal Celebration as the "First Wagner House." How long did it continue as a "Horse" or Hotel ? What were the other Wagner Houses or Hotels? Where were they located ard who owned them ?

Frothingham, in "is "History of Montgomery Co.," I ""S, mentions a "magnificent Hotel Wagner' which was built by Webster Wag- ner in 1878 in the Town of Cana- joharie and was "an ornament to the village and an evidence of the .. public spirit of its builder." Is

this the same as the later "board- ing and rooming house for work- men" which was sold to the Mont- gomery Electric Light and Power Company on Sept. 17, 1919 and renovated as a display room and hotel? (See Enterprise and News Sept. 15, 1949 "Thirty Years Ago" column). Is this hotel still oper- ating and by whom ?

The Hon. Webster Wagner

(1817-1882) who built the above Canajoharie Hotel Wagner in 1878 is better known as the inventor of the sleeping car in 1858 and as State Senator, 1872-81. He was a son of John 4 Waggoner and
