The scenes of the war through which they had recently passed were fresh in their minds! and it is not strange that much of a mili- tary spirit should exist among the people. Consequently the call for the performance of military duty was soon made, and the call was responded to by five men, of whom Gideon Messenger was one, going to Homer to train under Captain Moses Hopkins. Captain Hopkins had previously held low- er rank, but had exerted himself to get up a company of forty-five, by enlisting old men and boys to obviate the necessity of going to Marcellus to attend company drills. Soon the soldiers in Virgil were permitted to train in Town, and the first meeting for that purpose was held at the house of James Knapp, where M. B. My- nard . now lives, under the com- mand of Captain John Ellis, after- wards Judge Ellis of Dryden. The captains were after him succes- Brown, sively, Abial James Wright, George Wigant and Jo- seph Chaplin. ill health. At another muster Da- vid Snider was drawn and went, serving three months, the usual time for militia. There have also been living in the Town several others who were soldiers in that war. Among these were Joel Han- erck. Edmund H. Robinson, Jacob Pronson, Barnabas Baker, Zach- trinh Low, John D.
