History Of Westport
By Harry A. Odell
A short history of Westport, New York, on the west shore of lake Champlain, as far as it con- cerns the Odells, the Lobdells, the Ferrises, the Hanchets, the Cadys and the Davises, taken from Caro- line Halstead Royce's "Bessboro" and letters from F. Dear Sins: 25 July 1949
In looking over some back Is- sues of the Enterprise and News I find notices from our good friend Harry A. Odell, under date of 23 September 1948 .and 10 February 1949 and from Mrs. D. C. Mc- Creery on 16 December 1948, re- garding my great grandfather "Blank" Brooks.
There were a few errors In the above notices and I would like to correct them. We have not been able to find any information about the Brooks family back any furth- er than my great grandfather. My grandfather was - William Brainerd Brooks ,mentioned in the articles. Family tradition tells us that they came from New Eng- land and that members of the family were the Green Mountain Boys during the Revolution. We do know definitely that they lived in Delaware County, New York, where a son, William P. Brooks, was born In 1819. He died in St. Paul, Minnesota 5 August 1903. William-P. Brooks had a brother, he was my great grandfather. We. have been unable to find his given name so call him "Blank" Brooks for identification. He moved to Colden, Erie County, New York in the early 1800's and married: Emmeline Holt, the daughter of Albial Holt, who lived at Boston, Erie County, New York. His broth- er William P. Brooks,, married Emmeline's sister, Caroline Holt. "Blank" Brooks and Emmeline had at least two sons, William 'Brain- erd Brooks and Abial Holt Brooks both born in Colden, New York W. B. B. was born about 1844 and A. H. B. was born in February in 1839. Apparently "Blank" Brooks passed away about 1845 or 1846 and his brother William P. Brooks was appointed guardian for the boys. About 1850 William P. Brooks, Abial Holt and Emme- line Brooks and - their families moved west to Salem, Olmstead County, Minnesota. In about 1865 both of Emmeline's boys, William Bralnerd Brooks and Abial Holt Brooks, went to the Civil War. My grandfather Willlam Brainerd Brooks died in Buffalo Gap, Cus- ter County, South Dakota on June 14, 1885.
I have most of the information relative to William Brainerd Brooks and his wife. Margaret Bump. What I do want to know Is the given name of my great grandfather, "Blank" Brooks and anything relative to the Brooks family before they went to Colden, New York. We can probably find his given name from the land re- cords or from the guardianship papers and records from Erle Co., New York.
Apparently there were a numb- of the Brooks families which moved to New York State in the early 1800's - Silas Brooks from Conn. who went to Delaware County;' Ira Brooks who was mentioned by Mrs. McCreery; The now famous: Micah Brooks who lived in andf. near Buffalo; John Brooks and his descendants who were around Erie County; Benjamin Brooks who lived at Hamburg for over 20 years and then moved on west to Ohio and died near Bucyrus; etc.
