W. P. WEBSTER'S Grandparents Among the oldest of the extant newspaper clippnigs still extant in the papers of William Pellet Web- ster, 1851-1903, pioneer genealo- gist of the Waggoner-Wagner family of the Mohawk Valley, are two obituaries on his paternal grandfather, Dr. Joshua Webster, 1771-1849, of Fort Plain, N. Y., who for half a century, ministered to the sick over a wide area of Montgomery County. Because 1949. is the centennial anniversary of Dr. Webster's death, it seems fit- ting to have these obituraries pub- lished again. This following are verbatim copies.
MONTGOMERY PHOENIX,
Thursday, May 3, 1849
Death of Dr. Joshua Webster Died, in this village on the 2d inst., Doct. Joshua Webster, aged 78 years.
The deceased was a native of Scarsborough, in the State of Maine. He left his home, in early youth, with a limited education and wholly dependent upon his own exertions, to mould his des- tiny in after life. He soon found his way to the city of New York, where he embarked in mechanical pursuits, and acquired such a re- putation for energy and mechani- cal aptitude, that he became the superintendent of the establish- age. ment in which he was engaged.
Though for some years past From that city he removed to the perceptibly yielding to the infirmi- county of Ulster in this State, ties of age, she had until quite recently enjoyed health. Within a few days of her death, the symptoms of dissolu- tion Became apparent, and she and became acquainted, during his residence there, with Dr. James Oliver, a highly respectable physi- can of the county, who unged and induced him to abandon his me- peacefully passed away, without pain or struggle. chanical pursuits and engage in the study of Medicine. He acceded to the suggestion of his friend, with whom he studies ,and after having obtained his license as a physician -- just half a century since - he located in this village. During the long period, he has, with a four years' exception_un- remittingly pursued his profession. With what success his practice has been attended, his reputation and his many friends can attest. His naturally vigorous intellect, characterized by an uncommon sagacity and judgment, and aided by an indomitable energy, were ample equivalents for the want of early educational advantages.
In a variety of forms has Dr. Webster received from his fellow citizens, flattering manifestations of regard - ample testimonials to his rectitude, worth and capabil- ity. In this community, where his enterprise and public spirit have always been pre-eminent - where his exemplary deportment, useful- ness and hospitality have been so fully exhibited, his loss cannot easily be repaired. As a patriar-

But in the domestic circle he shone the brightest, and there he was all that man could be, as a husband, father, friend. He reared a large family, and though death had broken in upon and thinned their numbers, yet several have survived him, and he had the happiness of knowing
were honored and respected. His example was the talisman which pointed out to whom the path of Integrity and honor.
The community in which we now line know nothing of the subject of this notice, and consequently are not interested in these remarks; yet we could not forbear a passing tribute to his memory - to drop a tear on the grave of one we loved and honored.
Also among W. P. Webster's newspaper clippings is an obituary of Dr. Joshua Webster's wife, Catharine Wagner, 1785-1867, old- est child of Joseph Waggoner (Wagner), 1759-1848, son of Lt. Col. Johan Peter Waggoner, and his first wife Catharine Albeel, 1764-1829, dau. of Johannes 4, Abeel and Maria Knouts.

Mrs. Webster had been a mem- ber in full communion of the Re- former church for more than half a century - years before that church had an organization in this village. Her piety was conscien- tious, her worship devout, and her demeanor. in .every 'sense exemp- lary and blameless. Her life hav- ing thus been inspired by the single purpose of doing her Fath- er's will, it is consoling to her friends and a fitting finale, that her exit should be so peaceful and happy.
The deceased was a daughter of the late Joseph Wagner, one of the founders of this village, and was born in the town of Palatine in 1759, whence her father's fam- ily moved to this place in her early days.
