STOWITS

I have heard my grandfather Stowits relate stories of his fath- er's and places such as Sprakers Basin, Palatine Bridge and Cana- joharie were mentioned frequently. I was told that my great great grandfather ,Dr. Jonathon Stowits came from Sprakers Basin, whe- ther he was born there or not I do not know. My great grand- father Josuah H. E AND NEWS

Odell, asking for information rela- Pitcher who died in Onto, may tive to my Spurgeon family. There was an error in the notice in that he was asking about my grand- mother and grandfather, Matthias Spurgeon and his wife Nancy Olive Dillon. I have all the infor- mation I need on these people. The information I wanted was on

1309)X John or Jacob Frederick have been a son of William (1781- Petrie, son of Jacob Frederick 1863) and Betsey Pitcher who liv- Petrie (444) and Anna Eva Oren- ed and are buried at Sodus, N. dorf. He was probably from Mo- Y. and that his ancestors were the hawk, N. Y. Born July 5, 1796; William or John Pitcher living In died Aug. 20, 1827, Married Eliza- Dutchess Co., N. Y. in the 1790 beth Schuyler. Supposed to be a Census.

'Would like to have this verified the parents of Matthias Spurgeon.I and to learn the Ancestry of Mar- I have made quite a search for iah Pitcher b. 9-30-1788, Newark N. Y. Since, I do not see the St. Johnsville Enterprise regularly boat ,which was sold to the gov-

my Spurgeon line. The first I find of the name is where they came from Holland to England in the early 1500's. Hichard E. Day in his book "The Shadow of the Broad Brim," says: "The name must have been derived from the Dutch 'sprigen' meaning 'eloquent'. Job Spurgeon was one of the first in England. There was quite a clan of them in Dedham and at Halstead, Essex, England.

Next I find them in North and South Carolina in the 1700's name- ly: William, Jean, Eliza, etc. Then I find them in Coleran Township, Bedford County, West Virginia and in Pennsylvania (Monongalia) Ezekiel, Samuel, William, Willlam Jr., John, John Jr., George, James (who had sons: Jesse and Jona- than), James and John were bro- thers and came to Monongalla from Cumberland in 1784. They married sisters in the Browning family. Jesse Spurgeon kept a tav- ern near the Maryland-West Vir- ginia line during the Revolution.

Next I find them in Kentucky and in Ohio. Samuel Spurgeon went to Mt. Sterling, Kentucky about 1793. Jesse went to Hocking Township, Fairfield County, Ohio in 1799. In 1806 I find Jesse listed as a taxpayer and as a member of various juries in Fairfield County, Ohio. Elijah and Elias Spurgeon are listed as taxpayers in Bloom Township, Nathaniel and Asa Spurgeon In Clinton Township, Fairfield County, Ohio in 1806. In the list of veterans of the war of 1812 I find James, Willlam, George and Nathan Spurgeon.

Elias Spurgeon (b Ohio) listed above is my great grandfather and George (b. Ohio ab. 1816) is his brother. These are the first mem- ibers of the , family which I have been able to identify definitely. Next I find this Spurgeon family in Scott Township ,Marion County, Ohio, Samuel (relationship not known) moved there in 1821. A Zilla Spurgeon (thought to be a sister to Elias and George) was married there In 1824 to Sam'l Hazlet. Elias Spurgeon married Jane Likens, (b. Ohio ab. 1811) the daughter of James (b Va. a. 1785) and Jane Likens. Family tradition says that they were Dutch. James Likens was a vet- eran of the War of 1812. I know nothing more about the Likens family except the names of a few of Jane's brothers and sisters. This marriage, of course, made Jane Likens my great grandmother. Elias and Jane (Likens) Spurgeon had their first chidl, Priscilla, at Caledonia ,Marion County, Ohio in 1832. In 1836 Elias, Jane and other members of the Spurgeon family moved to the Black Hawk Pur- chase (now Cedar County) Iowa. There Elias died February 1847 of Typhoid fever and Jane his wife, died 21 March 1851 of TB. They had 7 children of which Mat- thias was my grandfather who came west in 1852 by Ox team. I would appreciate it very much If any of your readers could give ne any information on the Spur- reon or Likens families before .hey came to Ohio.

WAGNER, GARDNER

' Help needed in reconciling the apparent discrepancy between the incomplete data given in both W. P. Websters' diagrams and the Kane Co., Ill. History. It should be noted that the latter does not give the names of the wives of the above G. A. and Charles J. Pfran- gle. Were the above Martha J. and Laura E. Wagner born a late as the 1840's or is there a missing Wagner generation in W. P. Webster's diagrams?
