consideration Webster's view ap- peans to be confirmed by the

spelling "Wagener" in the old

Land Grant or Patent of 1637 acres to John Conradt Weiger, Jr., Johannes Lawyer Jr., and Peter Waganer the Palatinate refugee) on June 20, 1723; by "Waggoner" or "Wagoner" in baptismal, mar- riage, death and other records up to the early 1800's; and by "Wag- ne'r' sometimes "Wagener") in the majority of records from 1830's to the present. However, it should be noted that certain branches, such as most of those deriving from Johan Peter 3 Waggoner (Johan Peter 2, 1) and Anna Bell have retained the form "Wag- goner" to the present. (I shall appreciate information concerning any other present-day Waggoner branches.)

After Joseph 4 Wagner's death in 1855, the Bible descended to the son James Ransford 5 Wag- ner, who left it to his daughter Blanche 6 Wagner (Mrs. Henry Shaeffer of Ballston Spa, N. Y.). In January 1947, Blanche gave the Bible to me. It will be noted that entries are also made for the fam- ily of James Ransford 5 Wagner for a number of years but were discontinued with the deaths in in- fancy of two of his three oldest children,

Between the Old Testament and the Apocrypha are the four "Fam- Hly Record" pages, in the follow- ing onder: One for "Marriages," two for "Births" and one "Deaths."

for

The records appear to be in six different handwritings: The first handwriting is that of Joseph 4, himself and is the only one in which the surname is spelled "Waggoner." It gives the mar- riage of Joseph Waggoner Jr. and Minerva Riggs, the births of the first 7 children, and the death of the infant Riggs Waggoner. The second handwriting may be that of Minerva and gives only the births of the 8th and 9th chil- dren and the death of the infant James Ransford Wagner, 1st. The third and fifth, I have been un- able to jentify. The third hand- writing gives the births of the 10th and 11th children and the deaths of the infant Marvin Jos- eph Wagner and the mother, Min- erva Wagner. The fourth hand- writing was that of the son James Ransfond 5 Wagner and gives the marriage of James Ransford Wag- ner and Lucy A. Haight and the death of Cathern Candace Wag- ner. The fifth handwriting gives the death of Joseph Wagner, Jr., the father. The sixth handwriting, the only one in pencil, may be that of Lucy (Haight) Wagner and gives the births of the three oldest children of James Ransfond Wag- ner and Lucy A. Haight and! the deaths in infancy of two of these children.

A verbatim copy of the "Fam- ily Record" in this Blble is, as follows:

MARRIAGES

Joseph Waggoner Jr. & Minerva Riggs' were married the 12th of Feby. A. D. 1819

James Ransford Wagner & Lucy A. Haight were married the 1st

passing notice is claimed, in view of the fact that more than a ordi- nary degree of the triumphs of grace were evinced when meeting the King of Terrors. As in life, so also in the hour of dissolution, Christianity shone with a lustre that is well calculated to sustain and cheer the bereaved under their very sore trial. Her sickness was protracted and she uniformallly looked forward with calmness, submission and strong faith to the end. To part with dear relatives and friends is one of the most painful trials that befall the hu- man family. Jesus himself felt it so when he wept at the grave of a friend-but to part with whom death is a welcome messen- one ger is a rich consolation to those who hold to the secripture doc- trine of future accountability, con- nected as it is with future re- wards and punishments. The sub- ject of this notice was firmly of the belief that to pass the ordeal of the judgement safely, some- thing more than mere fancy is requisite to sustain the soul. She enjoyed the happy conviction that a living operative principle of and Christianity will do this, nothing else. She felt and often expressed it, that the notion that mankind were going passively to heaven without repentance, with- out faith, and without one holy emotion or act put forth for God is a most fatal delusion.

In this case, then, the bereav- ed mourn not as those who are without hope. "Yea, it might be said that they should even rejoice, rather than moan. Oh' who would detain the parting spirit, when standing by the couch of the dying and witnessing its angelic aspira- tion for a glorious immortality ? "Lond Lend oh, lend 'your wings!" "Oh grave, where is thy vlotory! Oh death, where tis thy sting ?" Or to hear language like that of Dr. Payson in his last moments-"The celestial city is full in my view- its glories beam upon me - its breezes fan me - its odors are wafted to me-its sounds strike upon my ear, and its spint is breathed into my heart. Nothing separates me from it but the river of death, which now appears as an insignificant rill that may be The crossed at a single step, whenever God shall give permission. sun of righteousness has been nearer, appearing brighter as he approached, gradually drawing nearer larger and and and now he fills the whole hemi- sphere pouring forth such a flood of glory, in which I seem to float like an insect in the rays of the sun!" Such only is the, death of the Christian. And who would stay the onward and upward flight of such a spirit, or who would call it back . Call it back! No! Let us rather join in holy response to the song of the angels, "Lift up your heads, oh ye gates, and let another ransomed soul en- ter the abordes of the blessed!" And let us catch the falling man- tle of the redeemed.

INSTALLMENT 2 WARNER-RIGGS BIBLE RECORD

The Bible in which this family record occurs is leather covered it contains 760 pages printed in double columns and has a number of full-page illustrations. The Bible is in poor condition; the pages are yellowed and stained, the covers are torn off, the first 32 pages are missing and the ink in which most of the records are written is faded. The title page to the New Testament gives the publication as 1625 in Coopers- town, N. Y. "Ste->typed, Printed and Published by H. & E. Phinney and sold by them at their Book- Store and by Boo' sellers General- ly in the United States "

Whether this Bible record should be referred to as the 'Wag- goner-Riggs Bible Record" or as the "Wagner-Riggs Bible Record" is debatable, for the reason that the records up to and including April 25, 1832 spell the name "Waggoner" and those beginning with Dec. 10, 1833 spell the name "Wagner." Possibly 1833 is the year in which Joseph 4 Wagner Jr. and his brothers and sisters changed the spelling to "Wagner" for the descendants of their father Johan Jost or Joseph 3 Waggoner who made the same change him- self a few years later. W. P. Webster, in "Johan Peter Wag- ner and His Descendants," p. 9, states that the original orthogra- phy was "Wagner" which became corrupted to "Waggoner" 0 "Wagoner" in early records but was later restored by most of the family under the influence of the Hon. Peter J. Wagner, brother of the Joseph 4 Wagner Jr., under
