Whereas application has been made to James H. Topping, Benj. H. Barnes and Abraham B. Dayton, commissioners of highways of the town of East- Hampton, by Isaac King, John M. Osborn, John Day- ton, John C. Hedges and others, residents in said town and liable to be assessed for highway labor, "To lay out a new road of the width of three rods through

land not enclosed, but heretofore partially cultivated and improved, which said road passes wholly over the lands of John M. Osborn, John Dayton and Isaac King, who have signified their consent to the laying out of said road by signing this petition, which said road is described as follows, to wit:
Beginning at the Georgica highway near the house of Thomas T. Hedges, and running along his land be- tween lands of Sineas C. M. Talmage to and including the new bridge over said pond, and from said pond the width of the road to be four rods, running along and between lands now or heretofore of Jonathan Os- born and over a small creek to the highway at the east end of Wainscott village."

Whereas a road which turns out of the old Wain- scott road near the house of Joseph Bassett and runs southeasterly mainly between the lands of Benjamin I. Hopping, Jonathan Osborn and heirs of Thomas Os- born and lands of Jonathan Osborn and John M. Os- born on the west, to the South beach and Atlantic ocean, now used as a highway, has been used as a highway for twenty years as such highway, but has never been recorded. Now, therefore, we, the under- signed, commissionrs of highways of the town of East- Hampton, all of said commissioners having been noti- fied to attend and deliberate upon the subject of this order,

Page 106, Book K .- At the annual Town Meeting held April 2nd, 1872, at the Academy, in the Town of East-Hampton, Henry- B. Tuthill, Esq., was elected Chairman, and John C. Hedges, Town Clerk, acted as Clerk.
It was voted that the meeting proceed to the elec- tion of town officers and that the polls of the election close at 2 o'clock P. M.
It was voted that the meeting go on with the ordin- ary business before canvassing the votes.
The Supervisor's report was read and accepted.
It was resolved that $400 be raised for the contin- gent expenses of the Town.
The report of the Overseers of the Poor was read and adopted.
It was resolved, that Dr. Van Scoy's bill of $60.10 be paid by the Overseers of the Poor.
It was resolved that the Supervisor and the Over- seers of the Poor be directed to sell the Poor House and lands belonging to the same at public or private sale, as to them shall seem most for the interests at the Town, and to use the proceeds of the sale for the support and maintenance of the poor.
It was voted that $1,000 be raised for the support of the poor.
It was voted that the bill of Mrs. Haynes be laid over to next year.
It was voted that the bill of Eugene Tooker be laid over to next year.
The clerk of the Trustees reported that their means on hand was about $90. The report was accepted.
The report of the Commissioners of Highways was read and accepted.

It was resolved, that the sum of $300 be deposited in the hands of the County Treasurer for the use of the County Superintendent of the Poor.
The following preamble and resolutions was adopt- ed by the meeting.
Whereas it is currently reported that the legisla- ture of this State has repealed the law which forbid the manufactures of fish-oil and the various products of their business, from discharging the waste water and filth resulting from said manufacture into the waters adjacent to their several places of manufac- ture, and,
Whereas the discharge of such waste water and filth into the water from which fish are taken is high- ly injurious and detrimental to the interests of the great body of people of Suffolk County, therefore,
Resolved, That the Legislature be and is hereby earnestly requested to re-enact said law or to pass some other law which shall effectually prevent the discharge of such offensive matter into any of the waters of the County of Suffolk.
Resolved, That the Senator and Member of Assem- bly from this County and District be and are hereby respectfully requested to use their utmost endeavors to have the above resolution carried out by the Legis- lature.
Resolved, That the Supervisor and such persons as he shall see fit to associate with him be a committee to take such measures as to them shall seem best to have both the above resolutions carried into effect.
Resolved, That the Trustees of the Town be and they are hereby requested to prevent as far as pos- sible the use of any of the public waters of this Town

for the reception of any of the offensive matters re- ferred to in the above preamble and resolutions.
Whereas, the people of the Towns of Southampton and East-Hampton are greatly inconvenienced by having their mails conveyed by the way of Greenport and across Shelter Island, and,
Whereas, there is a railroad, on which trains are daily run through the Town of Southampton and hay- ing its terminus in Sag-Harbor, within a short dis- tance of the Town of East-Hampton, and,
Whereas, it is desirable, and would greatly accom- modate the people of the Towns of Southampton and East-Hampton to have the United States mails con- veyed on the said railroad, and,
Whereas, the President of the said railroad has been applied to, and has refused to carry the United States mails on the said road for the maximum rate allowed by act of Congress in relation thereto, and,
Whereas, by the Laws of the State of New York. railroad corporations shall, when applied to by the Postmaster General, convey the United States mails on their road or roads respectively; and in case such corporations shall not agree as to rate of transporta- tion therefor, &c., it shall be lawful for the Governor to appoint Commissioners who shall fix the rate, &c., and
Whereas, we, in Town Meeting assembled are will- ing to show our approval of a proceeding to enforce our right under the laws in relation to carrying the mails, running the trains, &c., on the railroad herein- before mentioned, therefore,
Resolved, that the Supervisor and such persons as he may associate with him, be a committee to confer

and act with a committee from the Town of South- ampton in relation thereto, and that the said commit- tee be and are hereby requested to take such meas- ures as shall be deemed necessary to secure the trans- portation of the United States mails over the said railroad and at such time as shall most accommodate the people according to the statute in such case made and provided, and that the same be done at as early, a period as possible.
It was voted that the following named persons be Pound Masters for the year ensuing, Charles J. Hud- son, Clark L. King.
