At the annual Town Meeting of the Town of East- Hampton, for the election of Town Officers, held at Clinton Hall, upon the third day of April, 1888, Thos. F. Bisgood, Esq., was chosen Chairman, and Joseph S. Osborne, Town Clerk, acted as Clerk.


Upon request of the Chairman, Rev. J. D. Stokes opened the meeting with prayer.


The polls were then declared open and upon motion it was announced that they would close at four o'clock P. M. and balloting began.


A resolution authorizing the sum of six hundred dollars to be raised by tax for the contingent expen- ses of the Supervisor's account for the coming year, was voted on by ballot and decided in the affirmative, with no opposition.


A resolution to raise by tax the sum of one thous- and dollars, for the contingent expenses of the Over- seers of the Poor, for the support of the poor for the coming year, was likewise voted on by ballot and af- firmed.


The sum of six hundred dollars was appropriated by ballot, to be raised by tax, to be appled by the Record Committee toward printing the Town records.


The following resolution was introduced and pass- ed:


Resolved, That the Suupervisor be and is hereby authorized and instructed to pay to the Commission- ers of Highways, the sum of one hundred and fifty- six dollars and ninety-five cents, now remaining in his hands from the Dog Fund account of the previous year, for the improvement of the roads in the Town.

dollars is hereby appropriated to be offered as a re- ward for evidence that will lead to the arrest and conviction of any person or persons that may wilfully or carelessly set fire to the woods or unoccupied lands in this Town, and that that amount be inserted in the next annual tax levy.


It was also resolved, that the Supervisor repay to James Bassett, the sum of twelve 20-100 dollars paid by him for tax of 1886, assessed to him for, on prop- erty also assessed to Jebediah Conklin and the tax paid by him.


At four o'clock the polls were declared closed, and it was resolved that the business of this meeting ex- cept canvassing, adjourn.

Whereas a certain road in the Town of East-Hamp- ton, running from Newtown Lane through Toilsome to the highway known as the Turnpike, known for a portion of the distance as "Race Lane," has been used as a public highway for twenty years but has not been described and entered of record,


Now, therefore, we, the Commissioners of Highways of said Town, all of said Commissioners having been duly notified to attend and deliberate upon the sub- ject of this order,

W. 8.87 ch. to a stone set opposite the west corner of A. B. Dayton's land; thence N. 65 deg. 5 min. At a meeting of the Commissioners of Highways of the Town of East-Hampton, in the County of Suf- folk, held at the house of Samuel P. Osborne, on the first day of Octob: r, 1888, all of said Commissioners having been duly notified to attend the said meeting for the purpose of deliberating on the subject mat- ter of this order, of record of a highway recently pur- based of Hezekiah R. Edwards, through his land, to take the place of a road heretofore used and common- ly known as the " Eastside road to Barnes' Hole," said Edwards having released all claims for damages, and said highway having been surveyed and laid out by the aforesaid Commissioners.


It is hereby ordered, determined and certified, that a public highway shall be and the same is hereby laid out and opened and a record thereof made in the Town Clerk's office, as follows: Beginning at a stone set in the ground at a point on the Amagansett Springs highway (1 on map), from which point the

E. 18.05 ch. to a point on the Barnes' Hole highway from Amagansett, marked by a granite (2 on map) and 373 links from a ditch corner in land of said Hezekiah R. Edwards; that same to be and re- main a highway forever.


And we do further order, that the line of said sur- vey (black line on map) shall be the centre of said highway and that said highway shall be of the width of three rods throughout its entire length, and that all portions of said old road or highway not included within the above description be and the same are hereby discontinued.

Grimshaw and which was used else- where on the highways in this Town, said sum having been disallowed by the Town Board of Audit.


Resolved, That the people of East-Hampton Town, in Town Meeting assembled, hereby endorse and ap- prove the principle of the bill introduced in the State Senate by Hon. Simeon S. Hawkins, which provides for limiting the powers of the Board of Commission- ers of the Land Office, in the matter of grants of lands under the waters of Suffolk and Queen's Counties for beneficial enjoyment, by requiring the previous as- sent of at least two-thirds of the Supervisors of said

Counties, and respectfully ask of the Legislature the passage of such an act, as a just and reasonable meas- ure of security for the public interest in the now en- dangered shore fronts of said Counties.

All of the stations of this survey are marked by a granite set in the ground, except station A, and the width at the different points are as follows: Begin- ning with a width of 2.03 chains between A and C, narrowing as is described by the lines, the angles of which are marked on the map by letters, to station No. 1; then starting from station No. 1 with 88 links, uniformly widening to 90 links at No. 2 and contin- uing 90 links wide to No. 3, gradually narrowing to 70 links at No. 4, 62 links at No. 5 and 60 links at . No. 6, uniformly widening to 75 links at No. 7 and so continuing to No. 9, then uniformly widening to 1.00 chain at No. 10, narrowing to 85 links at No. 11 and 75 links at No. 12 and so continuing to No. 14, widen- ing to 80 links at No. 15, narrowing to 60 links at No. 16, and again widening at the corner of Roberts' Lane (No. 17 on map) abruptly to four rods and continuing of a uniform width of one chain to the end of this survey.


And we do further order that the lines of this sur- vey (black lines on map) from A to station No. 1 shall be the outside lines of said highway, and from No. 1 to No. 28 shall be the centre line of said highway, and that all portions of the present road not included in the foregoing description shall be and are hereby dis- continued as highway, and that this highway as above described shall be and remain a public highway for- ever.

W. 3.02 ch. distant, and running thence S. 62 deg. W. 5.37 ch. to the intersection of the line be- tween land of said Adelaide T. H. Barnes and heirs of Edward Baker, deceased, with the northerly line of " Plain Way Highway," as altered March 19, 1887, which said point is 54 links from station 2 of said alteration. The land thus taken for highways being about 14 rods, and has been purchased of and released by said Adelaide T. H. Barnes for said uses, to be and remain a highway forever.

ject matter of this order, for the recording of a high- way at the Springs, known as the Landing Road, as hereafter described,


It is hereby ordered, determined and certified that a public highway shall be and the same is hereby laid out and a record thereof made according to a survey which has been made under our direction, as follows: Beginning at a point on the Eastside highway at or near the village of the Springs, from which the south corner of the new house of Harriet S. Miller bears (magnetic meridian) N. 75 deg. W. 2.02 chains distant, and running thence N. 58} deg. E. 4.55 chains; thence N. 153 deg. E. 4.03 chains to No. 3 (on map); thence N. 32 deg. E. 2.65 chains to No. 4; thence N. 55} deg. E. 420 chains to No. 5, nearly opposite an ice house; being to this point three rods wide and the course of the survey being the centre line. For a portion of the distance the southerly line of the said highway passes through land of William A. King, which he consents to release for highway purposes; thence from No. 5 the line of survey, which is the outside line, all included in the description being highway, runs S. 464 deg. E. 1.94 chains to a point which is William A. King's north corner, and from thence N. 12 deg. E. to the Creek. Again beginning at No. 5 and running N. 464 deg. W. 37} chains; thence N. 453 deg. E. 1.00 chains to corner of the lot of John M. Parsons, and from thence N. ¿ deg. E. along said Parsons' line to the Creek 2.85 chains.
