During the panle period of the '90s, provided lodging houses for the poor and homeless, and for two winters maintained depots for distribution of coal at cost, to the poor. Identified with many practical charities, notably that of the distribution of Pasteurized milk to the poor of N. Y. City, maintaining the dispensaries at his own cxpense, with results, as shown by the Health Dep't statistics of the saving of the lives of many thou- sands of babies; this initial experiment has been copicd in other cities at home and abroad. Gave instaila- tion for pasteurization of milk to the cities of Vienna, Munich, Eberswalde (near Berlin), Liverpool, Dublin, and Sandiiausen (near Heidelberg). To the latter place also supplied for a year all milk free of charge. Succeeded in reducing death rate of children under two years in this town to less than half of the aver- age for the last five years. Established in 1912, and still maintains a Health Bureau in Palestine, which has been especially successful In combating maiaria and cye-diseases. At the same time opened Soup Kitchens in Jerusalem for free distribution of meals to those rendered destitute by Balkan War, 1913. Established Pasteur Inst. for Treatment of Rables at Jerusalem.
