Exb'n, Sydenham, England. Was young- est mem. and only Am. on the jury, his assos. on which, included Horace Darwin, Capt. de Abney and Profs. Frankiand, W. Gryll Adams and Fleming Jen- kins, all famous scientists; made sec. of his section, and organized and conducted experiments on dynamo machines, electric lights and gas engincs. Later re- signed from navy to become ass't to Mr. Edison, dur- ing which connection made Important improvements in matters connected with electric light distribution. Becoming interested in electric transmission of power, resigned a year afterward, and with E. H. Johnson, organized Sprague Electric R'y & Motor Co., and began development of electric motors. In 1884 ex- hibited several of these at Phila. Elec. Exb'n, which were soon afterward endorsed by parent Edison Elec- tric Light Co. for use by its. licensed co's. May, 1887, teok contract for equipment of Union Passenger R'y of Richmond, Va., with 80 motors for 40 cars, complete overhead system and a central station, the first com- mercial electric road on a large scale, and foundation of modern electric trolley development. The Sprague Co. was absorbed about 1890 by Edison Gen. Electric Co., with which remained for a time as consulting eng'r. Took up development of electric elevators, or- ganized Sprague Electric Eleveater Co. and developed high speed screw elevator, automatle house elevator, and double motor elevator, the latter being adopted for Central London R'y In 1892, with Drs. Louis Dun- can and Cary Hutchinson, designed one of carliest lo- comotives. In 1897 took personal contract for carrying out multiple unit system of train equipment on South Side Elevated R'y in Chicago, which was beginning of a train system which has now beceme universal with electrie train operation on underground, elevated and other roads. Elected mem. of Electric Traction Comm'n of N. Y. Central R'y, and for four years was active in inauguration of electric system on that road, collaborating with its chm'n, v .- p. W. J. Wilgus, in development of the protected under-contact third rail. Consulting eng'r Sprague Electric, Gen. Electric and Otis Elevator Co.'s; selected by Southern Pacific Co. to prepare, in collaboration with its officers, a re- port on possibility of electrifying the Sierra Nevada Mountain section of the Sacramento Div. of that Co. to increase its capacity. Awarded medal at Phila. Exb'n; gold medal, Parls Exp'n, 1889; Elliott Creson medal of Franklin Inst., 1902; grand prize La.
