MUNSON, JAMES EUGENE


Stenographer, inventor; b. Paris, Oneida County, New York, May 12, 1835; studied at Amherst; studied shorthand and became expert stenographer; settled in New York City, 1857; married. Was court stenogra- pher over thirty years; reported Beecher-Tilton case for N. Y. Sun. Expended much labor in simplifying existing systems of shorthand, the result being the Munson System. Invented process of setting and jus- tifying type automatically, and machines for doing same; also assisted in inventing a machine for operat- ing typewriting machines by telegraph. Author: The Complete Phonographer; Dictionary of Practical Pho- nography; Phrase Book of Practical Phonography; The Art of Phonography; A Shorter Course in Munson Phonography; Munson's Pocket Phonographic Dic- tionary.
