On completion of academy course, engaged in mercantile business; when 20 years 'old began business at Hanover, N. H., continuing about five years; in 1849, became connected with house of James M. Beebe & Co., Boston, as clerk; joined the firm later as partner, and after about five years came to N. Y. City and established the wholesale dry goods comm'n house of Morton & Grinnell; in 1863, went into the banking business, establishing the house of Morton, Bliss & Co., and in connection with Sir John Rose, who was late financial minister of Canada, founded house of Morton, Rose & Co., London. Made careful study of the financial transactions of the U. S. Gov't, and his firm was one of the syndicates which success- fully assisted in funding the national debt and made the resumption of sp'l payments possible at a fixed rate. The London firm were the first fiscal agents of the U. S. Gov't, 1873-1884; were again appt'd, 1889. In the negotiation of the U. S. bonds and the pay- ment of the Geneva Award of $15,500,000, and the Halifax Fishery Award of $5,500,000, his firm was associated with Messrs, Rothschilds and other London bankers. Firm of Morton, Bliss & Co. was dissolved Oct. 1, 1899, and was succeeded by the Morton Trust Co .; continued at head of the London house of Morton. Rose & Co. until its dissolution. App't, 1878, by President Hayes, hon. comm'r of U. S. to the Paris Exp'n; elected, 1878 and 1880, to 46th and 47th Con- gresses, serving from 1879-1883; strongly opposed the unlimited coinage of silver in 1879; also deeply in- terested in internat. politics and relations of U.
