Financier; b. in Nelson Co., Va., Oct. 17, 1851; ed. in schs. of that county; m. Baltimore, Md., Nov. 25, 1873, Ida M. Barry; five sons. Went to Baltimore at age of 17 and worked in dry goods comm'n house of John S. Barry until 1870, when came to N. Y. City and be- came connected with a house in Wall St .; became mem. of N. Y. Stock Exchange, 1874, and soon became iden- tified with corp'n interests and securities and espec- ially to consolidating and extending the street railway and lighting systems of N. City, Chicago and other large citics, being associated in and having active charge of enterprises of the late William C. Whitney for nearly thirty years; notably in effecting the con- solidation of various street railway systems of N. Y. City for a combination of capitalists, in 1886; went to London, in 1902, to take charge of fight which Am. Tobacco Co. was then making against the Imperial Tobacco Co. for a division of world territory for the tobacco trade, and in few weeks won the fight com- pletely; established harmonious relations with the British corp'n, and greatly enhancing the value of Am. company's business; was a leader in reorganization of Richmond & Danville System into present South- ern R'y; formed and executed the plans for the Cen- tral of Ga. R. R. and Banking Co .; sccured control of Scaboard Air Line N'y after an 8-year contest; ar- ranged the recent merging of street railways with the clevated railways and the subways system in such a way as to give to him and his associates practical control of the entire rapid transit system of N. Y. City; purchased a controlling interest in the stock of the Equitable Life Assurance Soc. of the U. S. in 1905; and is interested in and practically controls many important interests, domestic and foreign. Dir. Guaranty Trust Co., Am. Tobacco Co. Democrat; del- cgate from Va. to Nat. Dem.
