At age of 11 first appeared in public as violin soloist: at 15 was teaching harmony; in 1876 became one of first violins in orchestra conducted by Offenbach when latter visited America; later conductor for various theatrical and operatic companies, among them the Church Choir Pinafore Co. In 1880 appt'd leader of band of U. S. Marine Corps, Nat. Band, serving under Presidents Hayes, Garfield, Arthur, Cleveland and Harrison until Aug. 1, 1892, when resigned from U. S. S., and has five times visited Europe, giving a total of 9,000 concerts in 1,000 cities and covering over 600,000 miles of travel. Inaugurated Nov., 1910, in N. Y. tour of world, visiting Europe, Canary Islands, Africa, Tasmania, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji Islands, Sandwich Islands, British Columbia, re- turning to U. S. and closing in N. Y. after 14 months' travel.
