Mr. Rockefel- ler's benefactions have been large; in 1892 founded and endowed the University of Chicago, to which has since made many gifts, the total aggregating nearly $15,000,000; to the General Education Board, Incor- porated 1903, gave first $1 000,000, then in 1905, $10,- 000,000, and in Feb., 1907, $32,000,000 for the purposes of education; has given also $1,000,000 to Yale, large sums to Vassar, Mount Holyoke and Barnard colleges; endowed the Rockefeller Inst. for Med. Research In N. Y. City, The Rockefeller Foundation and other in- stitutlons; and has been a generous benefactor to Baptist inst'ns. Mem. Fifth Av. Baptist Ch., N. Y. City. Mem. S. A. R. Court, 1895, and to dellver an address at proceedings, closing existence of Court of Common Pleas. Was made chm'n of Comm'n to revise laws affecting practice of present Municipal Court, by col- leagues in B'd of Justice, and drew report which re- sulted in adoption by Legislature of Act of 1902. De- livered lecture on Municipal Court, its History and Practices at Columbia, 1903, by request delivered same lecture at N. Y. Law Sch., N. Y. Univ. and Fordham Law Schs., and Woman Lawyers' Club. Represented B'd of Justice, Dec., 1903, before Laws Delay Comm'n. The instalment system which worked injustice among the poor, was broken up through his instrumentality.
Has been frequent eontb'r to press on legal subjects especially with reference to making work of court more efficient.
