VIOLETT, ATWOOD
Born New Orleans, La., Feb. 19, 1847; s. William A., native of Alexandria, Va., who removed to New Orleans and established himself in business there in 1842 as W. A. Violett & Co., and Penciope A. (Oldham) Violett; ed. in private schools; in. New Orleans, La., Oiga, d. Will- iam Quenteii and Corinne Baquié. Enlisted in the Confederate army at Mobile, Ala., Jan., 1864. Later transferred to the Mil. Univ. of Alabama, at Tusca- loosa, wliere, in April, 1865, the cadets had an en- gagement with a brigade of one of the divisions of Wilson's Cavalry, a famous command of the Federal army and one that figured very conspicuously in the closing events of the Civil War. of the Confederacy, and was paroled by Major-Gen. Canby, of the Federal army, May, 1865. Entered father's office at New Orleans, and on his death, July 1, 1869, succeeded him under firm name of Vlolett, Black & Co. During the reconstruction period, In 1874, was conspicuously associated with a successful movement that resulted in overturning Louisiana car- pet-bag and negro domination, creating a sensation at that time throughout the country and leading to a marked and favorable cffect upon the Nat. col., 1887. The firm of Atwood Violett & Co., was In- augurated at New Orleans in 1890, and established, under the same name, in N. Y. City in 1893, the firm holding membership on the N.
