Humorist; b. Ilagerstown, Md., June 30, 1870; s. Col. Thomas F. McCardell, well-known Maryland news- paper man; m. Nov. 30, 1891, Frances Quirk, of Dublin, Ireland. At age of 13 began as a writer on Puck, Scribner's and other periodicals and magazines; at nineteen went to Alabama, and after working some tlme in a rock quarry and with a firm of railroad con-


tractors, became reporter on the Birmingham Age- Herald. Here his sketches and verses attracted the attention of Arthur Brisbane, then edltor N. Y. Even- ing in 1895 to start the Sunday World colored suppie- that paper; later went on editorial staff of Puck, leav- ing in 1895 to start the Sunday World colored supple- ment. Writer of songs, comic operas and contb'r to prose and verse to newspapers and magazines and to . humorous and satirical serles in the Herald. Author: The Wago Slaves of New York, 1898; The Skyscraper, 1899; Olde Love and Lavender, 1900; Jimmie Jones, 1902; Rise and Shine Stories, 1903; Conversation with a Chorus Girl, 1903; also musical comedies: The Fiilibus- ter, The Local Forecaster, The Gay Life, a comedy pro- duction, in 1910; At tho Blue Cuckoo, a one-act piay, first produced at the Little Theatre, in Philadephia, in 1913; The Panama Girl, a musical comedy, first pro- duecd in San Francisco, season of 1913-1914. Was a pioneer moving picture playwright, and since 1900 has written over six hundred moving picture plays which have been produced by the leading moving picture companies-Biograph, Vitagraph, Edison, Selig and others; also Weber & Fields in Mcyer & Mike Around the World, in five reels for Kincmacolor. Won the "Leaders of the World" $2,000 cash prize, with silver trophy valued at $1,000, for best advertising ideas for 32 leading American firms-Armour & Co., Remington Typewriter, etc., etc., in 1911. MCCARTHY, DENNIS


Retired; b. Syracuse, N. Y., 1854. His father was mayor of Syracusc, mem. of Congress, mem. State Sen- atc, and head of large dry goods firm in Syracuse. Upon his death Mr. McCarthy succceded him in busi- ness. In 1896 became pres. of St. Joseph Hosp. in Syracuse and held that position until in 1899 was appt'd mem. of the State B'd of Charities by Gov. Roosevelt. In 1907 was reappt'd mem. State B'd of Charitles by Gov. Hughes; resigned as fiscal super- visor of State Charities, 1913. Served as a mein. of important sub-coms .; aiso active in framing legislation in relation to charitable matters. In 1903 was instru- inental in securing the enactment of a law providing for the extension of the juvenilo court system and the probation of young offenders in several cities of the State. Appt'd in 1895 mem. of the comm'n to report upon the probation system. One of the results of the investigations of this comm'n was the establishment in 1906 of the State Probation Comm'n.
