Operatic singer; b. Vienna, Austria-Hungary, July 4, 1863; d. Justin Juch (music professor, who was a native of Vienna, but later a citizen of U. S.), and Augusta (Hahn) Juch; born during visit of parents In Vienna; when two years old, parents returned to U. S., making home in N. Y. Clty; ed. public schools and grad. from Normal School; m. Stamford, Conn., June 25, 1894, Francis L. Wellman, of the N. Y. City Bar. Her father was opposed to her entering profes- slonal life and did not encourage her to cultivate her musical talents; pursued musical studles in secret as pupll of Mme. Murio-Celll; made debut In concert in Chickering Hall, at which father was present, scoring


complete success; father then encouraged her studies. Engaged by Col. Mapleson, May, 1881, to sing leading soprano rôles in London, and made debut at Her Majesty's Grand Italian Opera as "Felina" in Mignon, June, 1881; other leading soprano rôles of Italian grand opera for three scasons; refused to renew en- gagement; shared work of Nilsson and Materna in Wagnerian tour in U. S. under mg'mt of Theodore Thomas, and sang alternate nights with Nilsson as "Eisa" in Lohengrin; was first artist engaged when the American Opera Co. was formed, and in that com- pany sang six rôles and 164 tinies; for about five ycars sang in festivals, symphonic concerts and at head of Emma Juch Grand English Opera Co., until her marriage.
