(from Mauch Chunk to Pottsville, Pa.); descended in ninth genera- tion from Henry Merritt, who was b. Scituate, Mass., died 1652, 2d John, 3d Ilenry, 4th Isaae, 5th Henry, 6th Aaron, 7th Bernard, who was Mr. Merritt's grand- father and in. Martha Willard. Descended in tenth generation from Richard Willard, 2d John, 3d Jacob of Newtown, Mass. (soldier in the Narragansett Expd'n, 1675), 4th Jonathan, 5th Jonathan, 6th Jona- than (at the age of 17 was with expd'n against Crown Point, and Lieut. in Revolutionary War), 7th Ephraim (with his father in Rev'y War); Ephraim's daughter, Martha, m. Bernard Merritt, Mr. Merritt's grandfather. In maternal ancestry descended in clghth generation, from Joseph Jenks (anclent Welsh family Jenkyn-son of John), Lynn, Mass., 1643 (first brass founder in New England and most distinguished of iron workers of Lynn, patented and built first saw mill (1648), made dies for "Pine tree" silver money 1652, built first fire engine for Boston, 1654, and patented scythe. 1655, made first wire In Colonics (1667), through his 2d wife, hls son, 2d John (also famous iron worker), s. Mrs. Merritt's ancestor, Baruth Pitts, Mayor of Lyme Regis, England, had a s. John, b. 1668, who emigrated to Boston, where he became a merchant and held several offices; his s. James m. Elizabeth, sister of Gov. Bowdoin and was the executor of the
Gov's Estate after his death. James and Elizabeth Pitts had three sons who all fought in the Revolu- tionary Army, of whom Lendall Pitts, principal leader of the Boston Tea Party, was the ancestor of Mrs. Merritt. Ent'd business life in banking house of W. F. Davis & Co., Boston; entered business on own ac- count as broker in State St .; became treas. Boston Fuse Co. and officially connected with Lake Superior & Nova Scotia Mining Co's, later transferred activities to N. Y. City, became mg'r of several estates; dir. Mercantile Library 1885, and took active part in ex- tension of its usefulness; trustee and v .- p. Hahne- mann Ilosp .: Mem. Consulting eng'r; b. Zanesville, O., July 14, 1868; s. Ralph S. and Mary J. (Jones) Mershon; ed. Zanesville High Sch., and after a year's experience in railroad location and construction entered Ohio State Univ., from which was grad. M.E., 1890. Ass't in physics during senior year, and ass't in elec. eng'ring, 1890- 1891, Ohio State Univ. Entered laboratory of West- inghouse Elec. and Mfg Co., fall of 1891; represented Westinghouse Co. at World's Columbian Exp'n, Chi- cago, 1893, in the tests of Westinghouse apparatus for awards; made, 1896, in vicinity of Telluride, Colo., high voltage experiments and measurements on a transmission line, the first of the kind ever made; for three years (1904-1907) carried on at Niagara Falls further experiments simllar to those at Telluride, the expense of which was defrayed by men prominently connected with electrical enterprises, the results of which measurements were made public in paper read before Am. Inst. Elec. Eng'rs, 1908. Left Westing- house Co., 1900, to take consulting practice in elec. and mech. eng'ring; is retained by large Interests in U. S., and has been retained by African Concessions Syndicate, Ltd., and Victoria Falls Power Co., of Lon- don, England, In connection with the proposed devel- opment of power at Victoria Falls, on the Zambesi River, and the transmission of power to Johannes- burg and the Witwatersrand, a distance of 700 miles. Has made a specialty of high voltage, long-distance power transmission; inventor of numerous electric devices now in use, for one of which received the John Scott Medal of the Franklin Inst. of Philadelphia.
