City in employ of Ralph Post, shipping and comm'n merchant; later in same capacity with firm of Wallace & Wickes; became connected, 1858, with David Dows & Co., shipping and comm'n merchants (founded 1825) and mem. of the firm in 1861, retiring from active business several years ago. Mem. Produce Exchange, 1859, was sec. of its Building Com. when its present great building was erected, and later, for several terms, its pres .; was connected with the Arbitration Comm'n and the Benefit Assurance Co. of the exchange, and was one of organizers Produce Exchange Gratuity System, whereby each mem. pays three dollars into a fund at death of a fellow mcm., and which controls over $1,000,000. Was mem. of canal comm'n appt'd by Governor Tilden, 1875, which exposed the canal ring frauds, leading to the placing of the canal in charge of the State sup't of public works; pres. and trustee N. Y. Life Ins. Co. from 1905; retired from the presidency, 1907. and retired as director, 1908. Democrat in nat. affairs, Presidential elector for Tilden, 1876, but supported Mckinley in 1896 and 1900, and Roosevelt in 1904.
