Cav .; in 1862 or- ganized the 1st Mounted Rifles, afterward known as 5th Mich. Cav. Immediately following, at urgent re- quest of gov., organized and commanded in field, . 7th Mich, Cav. Recelved patents for valuable accoutrc- ments for troops. After war settled in Mobile, Ala., and engaged as mf'r cottonseed oil, and in railroad promotion and construction, and was prop'r Mobile Register; elected to Congress from Mobile Dist. in 1869 with overwhelming majority, but refused certifi- cate by Reconstruction officials. In Jan., 1872, pat- ented the Bondolr car and spent the next ten years in Europe introducing it there, founding Compagnie In- ternationale des Wagons Lits; returned In 1883. settled in. N. Y. Clty, and established Mann Bondolr Car Co., afterward sold out to Pullman Car Co.
