FALL WORKSHOP
MARY McLAUGHLIN
The teachers in the elementary schools of Randolph held a most successful workshop preceding the opening of schools this fall. The objectives of this workshop, as set up by the committee in charge, were: to achieve greater efficiency in our schools through the sharing of methods, materials and experiences ; to foster a professional approach to the learning problems of the child; to develop a better understanding of the intellectual, physical, emotional and

moral needs of the child; to strengthen feelings of friend- ship and understanding among the school personnel; to help new teachers in their approach to teaching situations.
Beginning on September 3rd. the teachers met for four daily sessions at Stetson school. Each day's program included a general meeting and several group meetings ar- ranged according to grade interest. These sessions provided the opportunity to discuss the school program, sharing ideas and profiting by material brought in by guest consultants who spoke at the general meetings and attended the group meetings to give more specific help at each grade level.
Each group meeting had a leader and recorder and the project was co-ordinated by Mrs. Christine Gaughen, as- sisted by a committee of teachers representing each grade.
It was felt by the teachers that this opportunity pro- vided in the workshop to plan together at the beginning of the school year was of benefit to both the new and ex- perienced teachers.
REPORT OF THE SCHOOL NURSE HELEN F. CONLON, R.N.
Following is a report of my work during the year 1952:
Assisted Dr. Wells with the Health Examinations in grades 1-4-7-11. Recorded results on Health cards and sent notices of defects found to the parents.
Arrangements were made for health examinations of students in the upper grades who were entering competi- tive sports.
Seventy students who were eligible for the dental clinic conducted by the Board of Health were referred to Dr. Maguire for dental care.

TOWN OF RANDOLPH, MASS.
It is suggested that children attending pre-school regis- tration be given a Dental Examination Request card to take to the dentist and that they present the card to the teacher at the opening of school with the birth and vaccination cer- tificates. Upon entrance to the elementary school, attend- tion should be directed to the care of the first permanent teeth often referred to as the six-year molars. It is in this group that care of the first permanent molars should begin, as these teeth are so subject to decay that neglect can lead to their loss by extraction by the age of 10 years. Dental caries continue to be highly active in the Junior and Senior High School Students. Decay of teeth can be controlled by regular visits to the dentist, early treatment of small cavities, proper diet, proper and regular cleaning, topical applications of sodium fluoride.
The General Laws of Massachusetts now require that the vision and hearing of school children be tested with the Massachusetts Vision Test Kit and the Pure Tone Audio- meter.
The Massachusetts Vision Test will help to uncover visual difficulties not found by the Snellen Test, thereby making possible early referrals to qualified eye specialists.
The Pure Tone Audiometer test may be briefly des- cribed as a determination of a child's ability to hear soft sounds at different pitches. Hearing loss is responsible for defective speech in many cases.
Letters will be sent to parents of children failing these tests urging them to take child to eye or ear specialist for advice and treatment.
158 children who failed the vision test given by the teacher were retested and 53 children failed this test. Par- ents were notified.
48 children failed the hearing test and were retested with the audiometer. 8 of these children failed and notices
233
ONE HUNDRED AND SEVENTEENTH ANNUAL REPORT
were sent to parents. One child is now receiving lip reading lessons.
The Diphtheria - Tetanus - Immunization clinics were held in April and May in all elementary schools. A total of 325 shots were given by Dr. Wells.
227 children in grades one and six had booster shots.
48 pre-school and first grade children had the series of 3 shots. Two did not complete their series.
There were eight new names added to the list of physi- cally handicapped children making a total of 45 handicapped children in our schools. At present two children are unable to attend school due to illness. Arrangements have been made for them to have a visiting teacher until they are able to return to school.
The Norfolk County Chest-X-Ray program was carried on in October, when the mobile unit came to the Randolph High School to x-ray the senior class.
74 senior students and new personnel were X-rayed. There was no evidence of Tuberculosis found.
5 students who were absent that day were taken to the Norfolk County Hospital for their chest X-Ray.
In closing this report, I wish to thank Mr. Reade, the School Board and all personnel who have helped to make this year a pleasant one.
