ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTEENTH ANNUAL REPORT

Next school year the intention is to reach the Junior High School boys and girls and induct them into the various sports, conducted by the High School. These various teams are to be handled by competent people.

The Physical Education and Health program has been inaugurated this year by Miss Lappen for the grade schools and will be further advanced next year.

The cooperation by all concerned toward the Physical Education and Health Program has been wonderful and it is a great pleasure to look forward toward the future.

REPORT OF THE SUPERVISOR OF ATTENDANCE

STEPHEN J. HART

The past year has been quite busy as far as investiga- tions are concerned.

It was necessary to take a few cases to the Probation Office for informal hearings.

It was also my unpleasant duty to make four court appearances due to habitual absentees.

Truancy is not increasing, but is holding about the same.

The personnel of the School Department has been very cooperative during the year.

The activities at the playground consisted of the fol- lowing :

McNeill - Handicraft work, games, hikes, swimming, pet show, soft ball games and a play presented by the group at a parents gathering.

Stetson - Softball games, consisting of six teams in a league. Baseball games against a Stoughton playground, volleyball, horseshoe pitching, tennis, hike, swimming and golf.

Devine - Handicraft work, games, hike, swimming, pet show, weenie roast, and soft ball games.

On August 31, three bus loads of youngsters went to see the Boston Red Sox game.

A huge field day was conducted September 3rd at Stetson field with fifteen events taking place, including races, pie eating, and watermelon eating contests, and the cham- pionship softball game winding up the playground program.

I wish to express my thanks to the instructors Miss Alice Walsh, Mrs. Grace Welch and Mr. William Killoran for their fine co-operation, and to the school committee for their part in this fine project.

REPORT OF THE SCHOOL NURSE

HELEN F. CONLON, R.N.

I herewith submit my report for the year 1950.

ONE HUNDRED AND FIFTEENTH ANNUAL REPORT

The children in all grades were inspected and those showing evidence of contagious skin infections, pediculosis or communicable disease were recommended for exclusion. There are several stubborn cases of pediculosis which make it necessary to inspect some grades more often than others.

During the year talks on health, nutrition, dental care and personal cleanliness were given. The children in grades one through eight were weighed twice and the Senior High School pupils were weighed once during the year.

Dr. Wells has completed the health examinations in grades one through nine with the exception of the afternoon session of grade eight and several grades in the Prescott Primary and Tower Hill schools. He will continue the examinations until all the children have been examined. Physical defects found will be brought to the attention of the parents.

A special examination of students in the upper grades who were entering competitive sports, was given early in the fall.

Five children in grades one through twelve whose physical condition did not permit them to attend school re- ceived instructions in their home from visiting teachers.

Diphtheria prevention clinics under direction of the Board of Health were held in April and May in the Prescott and Devine schools. Thirty-four children received three doses of toxoid and 125 children were given a booster shot of toxoid. Eighteen children did not complete the series.

The dental clinic for school children sponsored by the Board of Health was continued after the Town meeting. Thirty-eight children were given dental treatments by Dr. Maguire.

184 children who failed the vision test given by their teacher were tested on a Keystone Telebinocular. Fifty-five children failed this test. Seventy-three children had their hearing tested on a Pure Tone audiometer. Parents of child- ren showing a vision or hearing defect were notified.

In December the Norfolk County Chest X-ray clinic was held in the Stetson High School. There were 177 X-

rayed including eighty-seven Seniors, five students who help in the cafeteria, and eighty-five school personnel.

In closing I wish to thank the school committee, the superintendent, teachers, and parents for their cooperation in the health program.

REPORT OF THE SCHOOL PHYSICIAN

CHARLES E. WELLS, M.D.

During the past year there have been fewer absences from school due to sickness than for several years, and we have had no epidemics to contend with. It has become under- stood that absence for other reasons than sickness is a matter of school discipline which does not require medical attention but only a note of explanation from a parent to the school principal. However, the rule requiring a physi- cian's permit for the return to school after three days absence because of illness is still in force and doubtless serves to reduce the spread of colds and other more serious contagious diseases in the schools.

More time has been devoted to the routine physical examinations, by cooperation of the school nurse, so that every child will have been examined by the middle of the school year, and all athletic teams before the beginning of their contests. Very few defects have been found but all are attended to in some way, usually by the parents to whose attention they are called.

Accidents occuring on school playgrounds or during games are attended to-and I attended all home football games-where my services have been required only by mem- bers of the visiting teams.

Office hours for issuing school certificates :

for the station announcer.

There will be days when schools are in session because conditions are not severe enough to cause complete shutdown of all activities. On such days, parents, as in former years, determine whether their children shall report to school. No excuse will be required of pupils for absence on such days, unless the parent so wishes. Consideration will be given pupils striving for perfect attendance.

*It is essentiad that we keep in mind that State Law requires that the High School shall be in session at least 180 days of each school year and for the grade schools, 160 days.
