Member of Colonel Scott's artillery in Illinois in 1846; enlisted as private in Iowa volunteers at Council Bluffs July 16, 1846, and started west the same year, going to
California, and was foreman of Captain Sutter's shoe fac- tory at the time goid was discovered in Callfornia; he left this position to pan goid for himself. Came to Utah in the fali of 1848.
