Married Martha Jane Knowlton Feb. 6, 1841, in Illinois. Member Nauvoo rellef society; secretary first relief society organized In Salt Lake. Personal friend of the Prophet and Patriarch, Joseph and Hyrum Smith. Wrote a history of Joseph, including his mother's memory of him. She had a fair knowledge of law, philosophy, history, poetry, chem- istry and geology. Was a member of the board of directors of the Brigham Young Academy, Provo. An earnest and efficient Sunday school worker. She was the daughter of Sidney A. Knowlton and Harriet Burnham of Illinois, plo- neers 1849, and was born June 3, 1822. Married Elizabeth Brittle 1849 (daughter of Jesse Brittle and Mary Round). She was taken prisoner In fight with Indians July 24, 1866, near Laramie, and was never after- ward seen. Their children: Floura Elizabeth b. Aug. 26, 1873, m. John Negus Nov. 6, 1895: Thomas Henry b. March 21, 1876. m. Ella Neal 1898; George Edward b. Jan. 26, 1878, died; Slener b. March 20, 1880, died; Annie Jane b. Dec. 30, 1881, m. Joseph P. Stock June 7, 1902; John b. Sept. 18, 1883, died; Charles W. b. Aug. 13, 1884, m. Rose Hutchins Feb. 2, 1906; Mary L. Beatrice b. Nov. 25, 1885, m. Claude Kimball Sept. 3, 1907; Myrtle b. Aug. 27, 1887, m. Morris Hodges April 3, 1908; Jesse L. b. Sept. 15, 1892; Violet Tressle b. Dec. 20, 1894, died; Reuben Francis b. COTTLE, WILLIAM HENRY (son of Henry Cottle and Eliz- abeth Brittle). Born March 22, 1852, Dudley, Worcester- shire, Eng. Came to Utah In September, 1866, Independent company. On July 24, previous, he was badly wounded In fight with Indians. All of this party were elther killed or wounded coming to Utah.


Married Julia A. Miller Feb. 5, 1872, Salt Lake City (daugh- ter of Stephen Miller and Mary Ann Humpery of Plaln- City, Utah, ploneers Oct. 1860, Capt. Miller company). She was born June 18, 1854. Their children: Mary Ann b. June 20, 1873; William Stephen b. June 4, 1876; Julla Y. A. b. Nov. 2, 1878.


Married Elizabeth S. Dummer July 31, 1879, Salt Lake City (daughter of William Dummer and Sarah Hyde of Salt Lake City, pioneers Sept. 15, 1867, Capt. Seeley company).
