BROWN, JAMES (son of James Brown and Polly [Mary] Wllllans of Roan county, N. C.). Born Sept. 30, 1801, In Roan county, N. C. Came to Utah in charge of Invalided and discharged Mormon Battalion soldiers and Mississippi immigrants, arriving at Salt Lake City July, 29, 1847, es- corted Into the city by the men of prominence, to the inspiring strains of martlal music. He left Aug. 9 for Call- fornia to collect his soldiers' pay, and brought back the first $10,000 in gold doubloons to the valley, which was the first money put in circulation by the colonists. This was but few months prevlous to the first discovery of gold In California by members of the Mormon Battalion.

First counselor to President Lorln Farr, and an Intimate adviscr to those high in authority. Dled Sept. 30, 1863, from fatally crushing his arm in a molasses mill, dying from gangrene.

Married Elizabeth M. Clegg March 4, 1872 (daughter of Benjamin Clegg and Grace McIntyre of Tooele, Utah). She was born Dec. 8, 1854. Their children: Lillioua, d. aged 14; Guardello, m. Bessie Parry; Mark C., m. Claire Cummings; Benjamin J., m. Alice Galloway; Louetta; Myrtle J., m. Henry W. Latimer. Families resided Salt Lake City.
BROWN, JOHN (son of John Brown and Martha Chapman of Sumner county, Tenn.). Born Oct. 23, 1820, in Tennessee. Came to Utah July 22, 1847, Brigham Young company, cap- tain 13th ten, and with Orson Pratt, was the first of the expeditionary party to gaze on the valley of Great Salt Lake.
Married Elizabeth Crosby May 21, 1844, Nauvoo, Ill. (daughter of John Crosby and Elizabeth Colman of Monroe county, Miss., latter a pioneer Oct. 19, 1848, Amasa M. Lyman company). She was born Dec. 21, 1822. Their chil- dren: Samuel, John Crosby (b. 1848) and Amasa Lyman, first three, died; Martha Elizabeth, m. James Orson Bullock; Pauline Eliza; Sarah, m. Joseph S. Staker; Sytha, m. Wilson I. Snyder; William Crosby, m. Ada Johnson; James Lehi, m. Selena Charlotte Curtis; m. Ella Larson; Parilee, m. George S. Hayes. Family resided Salt Lake City, Lehi and Pleasant Grove, Utah.
Married Amy Snyder Feb. 22, 1854 (daughter of Samuel Snyder and Henrietta Maria Stockwell of Salt Lake City), She was born Feb. 24, 1834. Their children: Henrietta, died; Laura Jane, m. Ezra F. City (daughter of George Gotleib Zimmerman and Julia Ann Hoke of Pennsylvania), who was born March 25, 1836. Their children: Julia Ann, died; Harriett Rosan, m. Isaac J. Hayes; Joseph and Josephine, died; Lydia Christina, m. Louis Warren Lund; Margerett, m. William Lehi Hayes; Susan Elizabeth, m. Swen L. Swensen; Amy Cassandra, m. Richard R. Lyman; John Zimmerman, m. Alice Vivia Driggs; Lawrence Hoke, died. Families resided Pleasant Grove, Utah.
In the summer of 1846 he started for Utah in company with William Crosby and Robert Crow company, who later came to Utah with Capt. James Brown's detachment of tho Mormon Battalion, with whom the party wintered in Pucblo, where they had expected to join the main body of the pio- neers coming to Utah. He and seven others returned to Mississippi upon learning that President Young had not yet left Winter Quartera, and that the exodus from Nauvoo was not yet complete. In April, 1847, he joined Brigham Young's pioneer company bound for Utah, and was the chief hunter of the caravan. He was among the first to assiat in the plowing, planting and preliminary irrigating in Salt Lake valley. He was said to have swung the first scythe on the native grasses of Utah that produced the first hay for the famished, travel-worn animals. He was among the first explorers of the several points of the valley which afterward became the sources of water supply, or strategic defense against the Indians. Hc was foremost in the Indian fight at Battle Creek Canyon December, 1848, and captain of Parley P. Pratt's company that explored southern Utah in the winter of 1849. Early in 1850 he formed the patrol that protected the settlers night and day against the constant incursions of hostile Indians. Later that year he was aent east as traveling agent for the Perpetual Emigration Fund, and spent two years at the different gathering points of Utah-bound immigration, outfitting the different trains for their journey across the plains. In 1852 he was elected to the territorial legislature and commissioned aide-de-camp in the general staff of the Nauvoo Legion with rank of colonel; in 1853 he was again superintendent of immigra- tion with headquarters at New Orleans, transferring over 2,000 European immigrants to river steamboats, and landing at Keokuk, Iowa, where he outfitted them for their trip to Utah. President 8th quorum seventies, Salt Lake City, and president of the mass quorum of Lehi. Was a member of the settlement exploring expedition to Saimon River, Oregon, 1857. Returning he was elected justice of peace at Lehi, and member of legislature again in 1859. Mia- sionary to England 1860, and, returning, was immigration agent at Florence, fitting out 15 companies of Utab immi- grants. In 1863 he was elected selectman of Utah county, and was mayor of Pleasant Grove for 10 years afterward. This county was represented again by him in the legia- lature in 1874-83. Bishop of Pleasant Grove for 29 years; presided over the southern states mission after the civil war for two years and returned again to Omaha as immi- gration agent. During this time he crossed the plains 15 times by team. Ordained patriarch 1893. Died Nov. 4, 1896, at Pleasant Grove.

Eugene Lusk Roberts; Gertrude b. Feb. 2, 1886, m. An- drew Theodore Rassmussen; James Curtis b. Feb. 9, 1888; Emma b. March 8, 1891, and Pauline b. Nov. 16, 1892, died; Hugh Crosby b. Aug. 15, 1895; Harold Whaley b. June 22, 1898; John Lyman b. Jan. 31, 1900; Ruth b. Nov. 4, 1903.
Married Ella Larson June 18, 1908, Salt Lake City (daugh- ter of Niels Peter Larson and Karen K. Swensen of Pleaa- ant Grove, Utah, pioneers 1859). She was born Feb. 22, 1871. Only child: Helen b. Dec. 30, 1909. Families resided Pleasant Grove and Provo.
High priest; superintendent Sunday achools Pleasant Grove; counselor to President Leonard Harrington of stake Sunday schools. President normal department Brigham Young University (Provo) and teacher of chemistry. Also a teacher Pleasant Grove schools and superintendent Utah county schools.

Married Alice Vivia Driggs Sept. 2, 1903, Salt Lake City (daughter of Benjamin Woodbury Driggs and Olivia Thank- ful Pratt of Pleasant Grove, pioneers 1852). She was born Sept. 28, 1877. Their children: John Zimmerman Jr. b. June 19, 1904; Hoke Woodbury Driggs b. May 7, 1908, d. June 29, 1910; Richard Lyman b. July 13, 1912. Family home Salt Lake City.
President 4th quorum seventies; missionary to southern states 1896-99; member Ensign stake Sunday school board. School teacher. Graduated from Utah State Normal School 1902; A. B. degree from University of Utah 1906, and head of its department of physiology 1907-10; received M. D. degree from Rush Medical College of Chicago 1911. Interne Groves L. D. S. Hospital 1911-12.
