REPORT OF THE WATER AND SEWERAGE BOARD

Water Department

The past year was a rather queer one on account of the many chances there were bound to be of interference with the old system while installing the new one. While perhaps the greater part of the interference is over, yet there is a good. chance of more before the spring. Miller and Oak Street mains are laid and the old services connected to them.

The only very serious break in the old mains happened in September when a bad leak showed up from the old six inch wrought iron main under the water tank at the pump house, where we found the W. I. pipe and the C. I. fittings were very badly corroded, and the pipe so thin in the threads that one joint had cracked for a third of the distance around the pipe, making a bad leak. In order to repair the leak, we had to drain the tank and pump directly into the mains for 85 hours, and waste the surplus water through the pump relief valve. Cost of this job was $349.79.

During the year 1931, we renewed the service pipes into three houses and installed one new service.

On account of the uncertainty as to just how long it will be before the old system will be out of commission, it is very difficult to make up a budget for 1932, and we recommend an appropriation of $2,700.00 for the Water Department.

SEWER DEPARTMENT Sanitary Sewers

In March, 1931, we cleaned the main sewer in the street that runs from Mitchell Street to Cottage Street. Tree roots as usual.

During the installation of the gas mains, the construction man broke into the particular sewers from four or five houses, but made the necessary repairs themselves.

Twice we have had to flush out the upper end of the Green Street sewer, also the Adams Street sewer at the end of Cot- tage Street. Did not find tree roots in either sewer. This flushing can be done much more easily and thoroughly when- ever the hydrants become available.

After a great deal of hard and expensive work, we got rid of the worst effects of the oil on the sewer beds, but neces- sarily had to take a lot of the gravel surface of the beds also, which was a bad feature. We hoped to have a small balance left towards the end of the season, with which we could re- place some of the gravel removed, but did not have it, so have left that feature over for the coming season.

We therefore ask for an appropriation of $1,000.00 for the year 1932.

LIBRARY REPORT

To the Board of Selectmen, the Trustees of the Memorial Public Library respectfully submit the following report for the year 1931:

Miss Margaret Place is the new member of the board. Due to the absence of Mr. Crocker, Dr. Clough was elected Chair- man, pro tem, while Miss Donlan was elected Secretary of the organization.

Mrs. Emery's leave of absence extended to July 1, 1931, and the work was efficiently carried on by her substitute, Miss Helen MacDonald, former teacher in the Ralph Wheelock School, and Miss Petrie, assistant librarian.

During the year the following books were purchased: Fic- tion 90; Non-fiction 52; Juveniles 54; making a total of 196 books. Magazines, to the amount of $50.00 were also pur- chased. Due to the release of plaster in the librarian's office, our purchasing power was diminished by a considerable amount.

To Mrs. Wheelwright, Mrs. Danielson, and Mrs. C. F. Clark, we are indebted for the gift of 11 books. We thank these ladies and wish our list of donors might be larger.

By comparing the following figures with those of the pre- ceding years, you will note the decided increase in circulation;

Circulation, (exclusive of magazines) 15,426

Adult

11,176

Juvenile 4,250

Non-fiction

2,653

$86.63 has been turned over to the Town Treasurer for fines collected.

The outside of the library was painted, as per appropriation.

The trustees recommend that the appropriation for the up- keep of the library shall be $2,000.00, including the Dog Tax.

92

In conclusion, the Librarian and the Trustees are anxious to cooperate with students and teachers of the public schools, and they will welcome any suggestions for helpful reference material.

Respectfully submitted, ANNE C. DONLAN, Secretary.
