REPORT OF THE SCHOOL COMMITTEE
To the Citizens of Medfield:
The following report is submitted for the year 1935:
Lower Appropriations
The School Committee entered the year 1935 with an- other cut in its appropriation-from $30,000 to $29,500. This represents a drop of more than 12% from the peak appropriations of $33,600 in the years 1929 and 1930. It is also the smallest amount voted since 1926. And all this is in the face of a steady increase in the number of pupils enrolled to a 1935 peak of 415.
Economies
With decreasing appropriations and an increasing en- rollment the School Committee has been compelled to follow a policy of the most rigid economy. It has cut down the educational opportunities of our boys and girls. It has been unable to show any expansion of activities at a time when such expansion is greatly needed.
The "Special Class" called for by State regulations was discontinued two years ago. This saved the services of one teacher, but it turned the pupils back into regular classes where they did not fit. The results were to slow down the progress of the regular classes and to force upon the "Special Class" pupils a type of work entirely unsuited to them.
The "Opportunity Class" started last year in an at- tempt to furnish simple vocational projects to a group of over-age pupils in the middle grades also had to be abandoned, largely due to lack of funds to provide a teacher and materials.
