REPORT OF THE INSPECTOR OF ANIMALS
January 1. 1938
To the Honorable Board of Selectmen :
Gentlemen :
I hereby submit my annual report for the past year. During the year I quarantined four dogs which had bitten four different people, and after the usual fourteen day period I examined these dogs for signs of Rabies, of which they showed none, so I released them.
In January a stray dog was picked up on East Main Street, and taken to the Animal Rescue League. Medfield. After being there a short time the dog showed signs of Rabies and was taken to the Animal Rescue League. Boston, where it was killed. Laboratory examination of the head proved the dog had Rabies. This dog while at the Animal Rescue League. Medfield, was in contact with another dog and I quarantined him also. Since the people that owned this dog wished to dispose of him and he had not bitten anyone. I got permission to have him killed, which was done.
My attention was called to another case of Rabies on March 8. and the dog was killed, the head being sent to the laboratory where examination proved the animal had been Rabid. On March 13, I quarantined a contact dog to this Rabid dog. and after being held a certain length of time he was released.
76
A sick dog was brought to my attention May 20, and as this dog did not show signs of Rabies, but the owner wished it killed, this was done. To be sure about any disease I took his head to the laboratory for examination which proved it did not have Rabies.
The following cattle were shipped to Medfield from points outside this state : five cows from New Hampshire on March 24, and two cows from New Mampshire on November 14, 1937. After the arrival of these cows I ex- amined them and sent their eartag numbers to the Director of Livestock Disease Control, and they were released. Another cow arrived from New Hampshire on Novem- ber 16, and as this cow did not have an eartag number I notified the Director of Livestock Disease Control, and she had to be retested, which was done and she passed all right.
I received orders from the Director of Livestock Disease Control, on November 10, to make the usual inspection of the condition of all stables and cattle, swine, sheep, and goats, this inspection to be completed on or before Janu- ary 1, 1938, which was done. I visited 36 stables in which are kept 344 cattle, 980 swine, 14 goats, and 6 sheep. These stables and animals were found to be kept in very good condition.
Respectfully yours, GEORGE S. CHENEY,
Inspector of Animals.
