SUPERINTENDENT'S REPORT

To the School Committee,

Dear Madam and Sirs:

I herewith present you my tenth annual report concerning the schools of Lynnfield.

The total enrollment in the elementary grades is three less than in 1931. The number of pupils in attendance at schools of secondary school grade is two greater than in 1931.

Although the total elementary enrollment has remained practically the same, we find that two of the rooms at the Centre School are over crowded while one of the rooms at the South School has but fifteen enrolled. With increases in enrollment greater than the capacity of either building it would be possible to maintain certain grades at each building and doubtless overcome crowded conditions for the present at least. This would require a large expenditure for transportation which does not seem advisable. It is hoped that a recommendation of the Committee on School Housing will be favorably acted upon before it is necessary to pay more for transportation of elementary pupils.

Due to the small enrollment in grade one at the South School it

69

REPORT OF SCHOOL COMMITTEE

has been possible to dispense with the services of one teacher.

Miss Isabel Thompson resigned her position as teacher of grades three and four at the Centre School to become effective at the close of school in June. This vacancy was filled by the election of Miss Gladys Andersen, a graduate of Salem Teachers' College, who had had two years' experience.

Since the opening of schools in September the teachers at both buildings have taken over the noon duties, thereby making it possible to dispense with the services of matrons.

Two new courses of study-one in Arithmetic for grades one to three and one in Health Education for grades one to six have been adopted for use. Both courses emphasize the practical more than the theoretical.

In order to determine the educational standard of our schools in comparison with that of other schools tests are frequently given. The standard to be obtained is determined from the test having been previ- ously given by the authors in many school systems throughout the United States.

During November and December the New Stanford Achievement Test Form W was given according to the author's instructions to all pupils enrolled in grades four to eight. This test is composed of ten parts :- Paragraph Meaning, Word Meaning, Spelling, Language Usage, Literature, History and Civics, Geography, Physiology, Arithmetic Reasoning, Arithmetic Computation.

Author's standard median, the median for all towns under my su- · pervision and median for grades at each building in Lynnfield are given.

Of the five median scores for each building in each case two medians are below the author's standard while three are above.

On the whole the results of these several tests give convincing proof that our schools are doing very satisfactory work. £ To raise our standard even higher, teachers are endeavoring to give more time to the individual classes or pupils as seems necessary.

As in past years the several organizations in town have supported

the schools-giving commendation when due or constructive criticism when found necessary.

At this time I wish to express to the members of the committee, the teachers, and parents my appreciation for their support of the school program provided the pupils.

Respectfully submitted,

J. D. WHITTIER.
